So there I was, sandwiched in the middle seat of a 5-hour flight to Toronto. On my right? A passenger with shoulders so broad their elbows dug into my waist. On my left? Someone who immediately removed their sweaty (and potent) shoes the moment they sat down. The flight was fully booked so there was no escaping the situation, but my one consolation was that I was comfortable.

When it comes to travel – especially air travel – we don’t always have a ton of control over our surroundings. What we do have some control over, though, are the things we pack for our trip.

Enter: the ultimate travel pants. While I was wedged between Pointy Elbows and Sweaty Feet, I had some time to think about what makes something a must for travelling. Comfort is key, of course, but so are items that can go from looking put together to going for a run or a bike ride.

They are amazing. The waistband doesn’t ride or feel too tight and the stretch is fantastic. I wore them to run to the gym when it was pouring out, and once I was inside, they dried pretty fast considering the amount of rain. I’m not usually a fan of pleated pockets, but the fit is flattering (I have wider hips and booty – so this is always an issue with fit!). These would be great for travellers and anyone who works in an active job that needs freedom of movement, but still needs to look professional.

I packed the Timeless pants in March for my trip to Asia to meet with our factory partners. Verdict? These were my go-to pants throughout the trip. The lightweight fabric was super comfortable and the material doesn’t wrinkle, so after long flights I didn’t get off the plane looking like I’d never seen an iron.

Back home in Vancouver, I’ve been using them on my bike ride to and from work. Since they keep their shape and don’t get crinkly, I don’t have to worry about changing for the day (side note: my commute is short and sweet, so no shower required). I love them so much that I purchased both colours.

##### My take:
I often travel with a [carry-on](/en/products/packs-and-bags/luggage) so I can breeze through security (although it’s not always a breeze). To make sure everything fits in my bag, I need clothes that are multi-functional and don’t wrinkle so I can wear them more than once – that’s why these pants were great on my recent trips. Not only did I wear them with heels to a meeting, but I also swapped my dress shoes for trainers and hit up a local trail after a long day. They work with my chameleon-like lifestyle, which is perfect because I don’t want to think too hard when it comes to packing.

Pro tip: These pants are so breathable you can feel the breeze blow right through. For that reason, I don’t recommend them for cold weather, if you get my drift?



## From the designer
We designed these pants to be versatile, wrinkle-free and easy to wear them with runners, heels or sandals. The pleats also make the pants flattering for most figures. While we sourced fabrics for these in Taiwan, we tested over 50 different fabrics to see if they would wrinkle. Once we chose the fabric, we put it through our [in-house testing](/en/explore/materials-and-technology) to make sure it will work.

Camp kitchen checklist

The only dark side of camping and slowly building your collection of rad outdoor gear? Inevitably, you’ll start to wonder where you’re going to store it all while you’re waiting for the weekend or your next trip to arrive.

As urbanization increases and our living quarters shrink (anyone else’s apartment under 600 square feet?), it’s wise to invest in gear that’s space efficient, does double-duty inside and out, and packs up small for storage. Luckily, there are solutions and camping gear picks that fit the bill for your tiny – but still super cute – apartment.

### Tip 1: Go ultralight and ultra-compact
You don’t have to be an ultralight backcountry hiker or camper to reap the benefits of ultralight products. Gear that’s designed to pack up small to fit in a backpack means that it’s also space-efficient for storage. This is especially ideal if you don’t have a storage locker, a garage or a spare room, and need to stash your tent and sleeping gear in your cupboards or under your bed.

##### Fits in a drawer

##### Like a puffy jacket for sleeping
For sleeping pads, the latest from our material engineers and designers is the [VectAir sleeping pad](/en/product/6008-339/vectair-insulated-sleeping-pad). It’s an insulated pad that weighs 0.8–1kg (depending on the size) and rolls up into a small package for storage. When it’s inflated, it gives you a cushy warm surface to sleep on, thanks to PrimaLoft synthetic insulation – the same insulation used in some puffy jackets. You can use your breath to blow it up, or use a little pump (sold separately) to inflate it.

Another good pick is the Therm-a-rest [ProLite Sleeping Pad](/en/product/6008-251/prolite-plus-wv-sleeping-pad). Made of highly compressible foam, it expands as quick as it deflates. Depending on the size you use, it rolls up to about 28–33cm long and 10–13cm in diameter (about the size of a tall Nalgene bottle). You can also store it unrolled with the valve open under your bed, couch or behind a door.

### Tip 2: Camping pillows for your couch
Is it just me or could these pillows double as throw cushions? Brands are stepping it up in terms of prints and colours for camp gear, which makes them useful on your couch or in your tent. The [Therm-a-rest compressible pillows](/en/product/6018-268/compressible-pillow-cinch) roll up into their built-in pockets and are quick-drying in case you drool a little (we all do).



### Tip 3: Water gear that packs down
If you spend a bunch of time camping lakeside, inflatables have two benefits for city dwellers: easy storage at home and easy transport if you don’t have a vehicle (or a roof rack).



##### Inflatable SUPs
There are lots of inflatable SUPs to choose from. The newest ones from [Level Six](/en/products/watersports/paddleboarding/paddleboards/inflatable-paddleboards?brand=Level%20Six) are 30% lighter than traditional inflatables and also roll up smaller (win/win). You can pump it up in about 10 minutes, so you spend as little time possible inflating and more time paddling.

The SUP comes with everything you need (except for a paddle), like a high-pressure pump, leash, and repair kit. It all fits in a nifty carry bag with shoulder straps so you can easily catch the bus or train to the water. To go with your inflatable SUP, look for a [3-piece paddle](/en/product/5041-765/boost-3-pc-adjustable-sup-paddle?colour=White) that will fit in the carry bag, like this Accent Octane paddle.

If you’ll be paddleboarding, you’ll need a PFD. [Inflatable PFDs](/en/product/6013-595/minimalist-belt-pack) are compact options that you wear around your waist or your chest (this one is from Mustang Survival), and don’t take up much room in your closet.



##### Inflatable kayaks
[Inflatable kayaks](/en/products/watersports/kayaking/kayaks/inflatable-kayaks) are becoming increasingly popular with urban dwellers since they store easily, inflate fast and dry quickly. They take the need for a roof rack out of the equation, pack down to about the size of a piece of luggage, and are still stiff and responsive enough to handle rough water, including rivers up to Class II (i.e., sections of the Bow river, or any other novice-level river with wide clear channels and straightforward rapids). To go with your inflatable kayak, choose a packable [4-piece paddle](/en/product/5053-036/lanai-select-4-piece-paddle).



### Tip 3: Camp gear for your kitchen
With limited kitchen counter space in most condos (barely enough for one person), it’s often not realistic to use a big drip coffee maker at home – plus it’s not as delicious as coffee from an [Aeropress](/en/product/6009-760/go-travel-coffee-press). Many MEC staffers, myself included, use [camp coffee addict’s gear](/en/article/a-coffee-addicts-guide-to-camp-coffee) even when we’re not camping. Most are super easy to clean and stow away in a drawer when you’re done.



### 

Once 5 o’clock rolls around at home or at camp, you can swap the Aeropress for a Happy Hour System, complete with a citrus reamer, shaker and jigger cap which conveniently stacks into itself for easy storing in a drawer or kitchen cupboard. Lime margarita anyone?



### Outdoor/indoor blankets

Another option? If you camp with your friends as a group, try splitting the gear responsibility for shared items… maybe you have the big tent and other friends are in charge of the camp kitchen tub or SUP. Not only can this save money, it also spreads your camp gear storage needs across the city instead of solely in your apartment.

If you had asked me to go camping a few years ago, I would have found the first blanket to hide under. Back then, it just seemed like so much effort, and I wasn’t prepared to leave behind my cozy bed for the forest floor and a sleeping bag just yet.

But after my first time camping, I realized that your trip and your campsite are what you make of them. Adding comforts and character to your campsite can help your experience go from “roughing it” in the forest to a weekend more comfy and photo-worthy than one spent in the city. Even on a short getaway with friends, nothing beats getting a little indulgent and sprucing up your campsite, especially if you’re rolling there with a vehicle or are just a short walk to your site. Here are some tricks I’ve learned along the way that can bring a little more luxury to your next camping trip.

### Get fancy with meal planning


It’s a myth that camping means denying yourself the comforts or luxuries of home. With room in your trunk and some solid camping cookware, you can almost recreate a mini version of your very own kitchen, only outdoors.

Who’s to say you can’t cook a 3-course meal in the woods? There are lots of double burner stoves to choose from that are still light and compact, like the [GSI Pinnacle Pro 2 Burner Stove](/en/product/6005-634/pinnacle-pro-2-burner-stove), for instance. I like to poach marinated chicken in boiling water (all you need is a pot) until it’s shreddable and treat my campmates to chicken and pineapple tacos by the campfire. You can also step things up by charring corn on the campstove and adding it to the tacos or a cold salad.

### Create the ultimate hangout spot


Beyond the basic tarp and tent combo, you can add a little flair to your campsite to make it feel more luxurious.

Some [cozy bedding](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-bags-quilts-and-pillows) goes a very long way. When you’re car camping, there’s plenty more room in the trunk than there would be in a backpack, so why not take advantage? Bringing throw blankets and pillows can help you turn your tent set-up from comfortable to a full-on adult fort in the woods. Consider creating a tent “patio” with a tarp, blankets and some [deluxe camping chairs](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camp-furniture/chairs) to enjoy camp coffee and breakfast in the sunlight.

You can also make use of the space around you, including the trees in the area. Most of us are familiar with the tree-to-tree clothesline set up, but why not [hang up a hammock](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camp-furniture/hammocks) instead? For an afternoon lying horizontal under the trees, it’s worth the 5-minute set-up.

### Add mood lighting


Consider swapping out headlamps to create some mood lighting. Lanterns are an easy and quick way to give your campsite some ambiance. You make your own with tealights in glass containers or pick up some rechargeable or USB-powered options (like the [Black Diamond Moji R+ Lantern](/en/product/6017-046/moji-r%2B-lantern)). But to really jazz up your campsite, consider hanging LED accessory lights around your tent or from trees. It may seem like a small addition, but twinkling lights can have a magical effect on the most simplistic of campsites.

Outdoor festival camping checklist

Building up a camping gear collection can be an exciting step to spending more time outside and planning trips. For some people, scoping out new gear inventions online or wandering down store aisles while thinking about upcoming trips can be almost as fun as the excursions themselves. But with so much gear to choose from, it can be hard to know where to invest and where to count your pennies – especially if you’re stocking up all at once.
