If you’ve got a sustainably minded gift picked out, how do you keep the theme going when you’re ready to start gift wrapping?

Most foil-lined, metallic or glittery wrapping paper can’t go in recycling bins; same goes for plastic ribbons and bows. In Canada, a 2017 study estimated that 540,000 tonnes of wrapping paper and gift bags are thrown out in a year1. So why not try some lower-impact and reusable solutions? You likely already have some of these options lying around the house.

## Alternatives to wrapping paper


### Maps
[Maps](/en/products/travel-gear/books-and-maps/maps/c/936) make excellent gift wrap. Bonus if it’s a map of a place your gift recipient has never been to and can inspire a new trip. Double bonus if the map is waterproof, because then it can be reused and re-gifted for years to come. Scope out thrift stores for vintage options too.

### Kraft paper or newsprint
If you order things online, you’ve likely come across some brown kraft paper used as filler packaging. Collect this up and simply cut it to size for your gifts. If you like to unwind with a newspaper on the weekends (or can find some in the recycling bin at your apartment building), save the comic sections for a pop of colour or cut out articles that you think future gift recipients might get a kick out of.

Magazines and old calendars are also bright options – secondhand stores are often a goldmine for these, and they’re way cheaper than brand-new gift wrap.

### Bandanas
A simple, colourful way to wrap a small gift or multiple small items. Check online for lots of different techniques for tying fancy knots, no tape or ribbon required. Whoever’s on the receiving end can use the bandana gift wrap for years to come as a headband for hiking, an eyemask to sleep in on camping trips, or even a sling for first aid. Look for thrifted bandanas or organic cotton if you’re choosing new.



### Brown paper bags
Many shops give out these as alternatives to plastic bags. The ones with a handle have a classic look and can be reused many more times (if there’s a logo on the side, cover it up with something cut out from a magazine). Jazz up with a colourful handmade tag tied to the handle and you’re ready to go.

### Packing cubes
What better way to wrap than to encase your gift in something people can use for a future trip? Plus wrapping is as simple as doing up a zipper. When we chatted with MEC staffers, multiple people told us packing cubes were always a big hit as gift wrap. ### Waste-less tote bag

## Alternatives to tape
String, twine or leftover ribbon you’ve stashed away are great ways to secure a gift instead of tape. Old climbing rope is a burly way to tie gifts closed – awesome for outdoorsy friends.

### Handmade tags
Nothing beats a personal touch. Cut out handmade tags from recycled or one-sided paper, and make them extra festive by getting creative with shapes or tying them one with string or leftover ribbon from past years.

### Paper snowflakes
A fun activity to do with kids, but you definitely don’t need to be a kid to relive the nostalgia. Recycled paper rescued from the blue bins works nicely. Carefully tie a snowflake onto your wrapped gift as decoration to get people dreaming of powder days.

### Fallen twigs and branches
Bundle a few sticks together with a reusable festive ribbon to hang on your front door or to use as a centrepiece at holiday dinners. Winter storms also give you a chance to find natural decorations; take a walk after a storm to look for small sprigs or green cedar bits that were knocked onto the ground, and include them in your decorations or gift wrapping too. When you’re done with these decorations for the season, make it a mission to return what you’ve borrowed from nature – it’s a good excuse for a winter walk.

Growing up in Ontario cottage country and now immersed in West Coast cabin life, I’ve spent my fair share of time obsessing over big splash contests, card game wars, campfire sing-a-longs and never-ending nature vibes.

Do you know someone who lives for moments like these too? Whether you call it the cabin or the cottage, there are plenty of gift ideas for people who just can’t be there enough.

To help you on your search, we pulled together a list of cottage gifts for your cabin-loving friends or family, so they can make the most of hanging out lakeside in Muskoka or snuggling up in an A-frame looking out at forest views.

## 1. Outdoor blanket


Star-gazing sessions and morning coffee on the dock aren’t complete without a cozy blanket. Dissent Labs ski socks! Most skiers will never pay $47 for a pair of socks, but if you buy them a pair of these, they’ll never have another blister and they’ll love you forever. I got them for two backcountry ski friends a few years ago, and they’ve haven’t bought any other brand of ski socks since then. Plus, the first pairs I got them are still going strong. They last forever.

Over the past decade, I’ve been lucky enough to have some unforgettable travel experiences. I’ve lived on a rooftop in Beirut, dirtbagged down the west coast from Canada to Latin America, and spent way too much time looking for places to sleep in airports across the globe. What I take in my pack is hugely important. I need gear for all occasions – but not extra stuff that will be dead weight at the bottom of my bag.

With these experiences in my back pocket, here are suggestions for some awesome gift ideas for the traveller in your life.

## 1. Packing cubes


Discovering [packing cubes](/en/products/travel-gear/travel-accessories/travel-pouches-and-packing-organizers/c/1354) was a revelation. The organization and compression of my clothing and electronics suddenly improved tenfold. I always pack an extra cube in case I come home with a collection of T-shirts from Armenia, hot pepper paste from Lebanon or a bunch of gifts for friends.



Compact, incredibly absorbent and quick drying – I never hit the road without a [travel towel](/en/product/5024-431/Personal-Towel). Every traveller should own one to dry off from a river dunk during a long-distance cycle tour or a rest day shower at a Tbilisi hostel.

## 3. A backpack that acts like a suitcase


Know someone who wants to travel light and skip the luggage conveyor at the airport? Hi there, friends! Allen The Dog here. I’d like to bark about a few great picks for your pups during the holiday season.

As a self-identified #adventuredog, I’ve been fortunate to spend the majority of my five years on this planet enjoying the outdoors. When it comes to stocking stuffers for convivial canines, it’s always good to have options. Here are a few of my favourites:

## 1. A frisbee that floats


For your furry friends who love to fetch. The soft, durable West Paw Dash Frisbee has a hole in the middle to make it easy for you to pick up and for your human to toss really fast. Plus, it floats! So it’s an especially great gift for all the water-lovers out there (not me).

It’s no secret that I’m a coffee nerd. I’ll drag friends blocks out of our way in an unfamiliar city in search of the perfect cup, despite the fact that “there’s a place right here, Shauna.” I’ll delay early morning starts by quietly slipping around the corner to the espresso bar, even though there’s drip at the bakery my friends wanted to go to.

My love of *good*coffee has been described by those close to me as my “most irritating quality,” so I figure at this stage it’s too late to go back – why not lean into it like the handle of a finely crafted French press?

We’ve always wanted to know what it takes to compete in this sport, so we took a group of Canada’s strongest climbers through a rigorous Q&A session. #### 1. Climbing at the Olympics combines three disciplines: speed climbing, bouldering and lead climbing. What do you think of this format?
I was heavily involved with the format of combined for Tokyo 2020. As the IOC only gave the **IFSC one set of medals**, the combined of all three disciplines made perfect sense. For the 2024 Games, speed has been proposed to be split apart. The goal of the IFSC was always to have at least three set of medals for our original three disciplines of speed, lead and boulder. – Sean McColl



#### 2. What’s your favourite discipline to compete in?
Bouldering. A big part of that is due to the atmosphere at the competitions. There’s an **electric energy** at a good bouldering comp that’s just so fun to climb in. It’s more fast-paced and less mentally taxing. – Cat Carkner

I have always been split between lead and bouldering. I like having to **adapt to different scenarios** and using my mind to problem solve and execute. I find the mental components of lead and bouldering really interesting. – Lucas Uchida



#### 3. What does a typical week of training look like?
It depends on what phase of training I’m in. For the most part, I train five to six days a week, for three to six hours per day. A day can have any combination of: warmup, hanging, campusing, bouldering skills, circuits, lead climbing, cardio, stretching, mobility, recovery exercises. On average, this means anywhere from **15 to 30 hours per week**. – Sean McColl

I won’t give you all my secrets, but a typical week involves a lot of work on the **components of climbing**, rather than just climbing. I usually spend two to three days focusing on the strength components and two to three days focusing on technical skills. – Tosh Sherkat

Training **varies depending on the season**. If it’s lead season, I spend a lot of time going round and round on circuit walls. If it’s bouldering season, I get as much variety in styles of climbing as I possibly can. – Allison Vest

A typical week involves five days being in the gym climbing. Among those five days are two days of strength training. There’s **a lot of climbing involved**. – Lucas Uchida



#### 4. How do you mentally prepare for a comp?

I like to spend some time before imagining the sensations I might feel competing. Kind of a **mental rehearsal** of all the feelings I might have and how I would deal with them. – Lucas Uchida



#### 5. What’s it like to compete in front of a crowd?
It may sound weird to some people, but I love it. I have always loved it. Maybe it’s because I am a bit of a drama queen, but I have always fed on the **energy of a large crowd** and allowed it to build me up while I am competing. – Allison Vest

I like it. I’m not totally sure why, but I know that when the clock is running down; I want to do the climb, and the crowd wants me to do the climb and it **just feels very wholesome**. – Tosh Sherkat



#### 6. How important is it to you to be a mentor to the next generation of Canadian climbers?
To be a mentor, especially to Canadians, is one of my ultimate goals. I know that eventually I will stop competing, but if knowledge can be passed on repeatedly, then the **program will continue to thrive**. – Sean McColl

To me, it is one of the most important things. Obviously as an athlete I want to succeed and reach my goals, but the **development of climbing in Canada** in general is also extremely important. I was lucky enough to have role models and mentors growing up and if I can make a difference to even just one kid, that would be super cool. Across the boards, our youth team is psyched, kind, and passionate. The future looks bright. – Allison Vest

#### 7. What’s your favourite part of the team Canada comp jerseys?
The white, the red, and **the pride I feel** while wearing it. – Sean McColl

This is the first time we have had a jersey made from scratch specifically for the team. For me it represents a **big step in the right direction**. – Lucas Uchida



#### 8. Who do you look to for inspiration?
I really admire climbers who have used their **influence to advocate for positive change**, like Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell. On a pure admiration basis, I’m a big fangirl for Janja Garnbret and Akiyo Noguchi. – Cat Carkner

**Sonnie Trotter**. He was my coach when I was 15, and he displays such an unbridled love for the sport and for his own stoke! The IFSC livestream is also a huge inspiration. I obsessively watch world cups, and try to replicate the movements in my own training. – Tosh Sherkat



#### 9. Top tips to recover after an intense comp or training sesh?
Active recovery, and then **rest**. Many kids don’t know how to properly rest anymore, it’s weird. – Sean McColl

#### 10. As a competitive climber you travel a lot. What’s your favourite place you’ve competed?
**Japan** was one of the coolest places I’ve gotten to visit. I like the culture, the food, and the Japanese are very respectful like Canadians. – Sean McColl

**Vail** is always fun because you are competing in the mountains and are surrounded by an outdoor sport culture. **Wujiang** is a favourite of mine because of how different China is from home and how the competition venue and accommodation are right next to each other. Creates a bit of a community even if it’s just for the event. – Allison Vest



#### 11. Best travel hack when you’re on the road?
Eye mask for sleeping. I am super light sensitive so when I am travelling (or when I am at home) I always make sure to **bring my eye mask**. I usually even pack an extra in case something happens to the first one. Crucial beta. – Allison Vest



#### 12. What’s the best way to clean climbing shoes?
I sprinkle some **baby powder** in them everyday. During comps I lay out a foot towel under the boulder so I can wipe off excess chalk from the mat. – Cat Carkner

I shove chalk up my nose. There’s **no cure** for my stinky-shoes. – Tosh Sherkat



#### 13. Last one: how do you stay motivated?
The **next competition**. – Sean McColl

Reflecting on my goals and on how far I’ve come keeps me motivated. As long as I’m **psyched for more**, I feel like I’m doing the right thing. – Allison Vest
