What’s different about outdoor climbing compared to indoor climbing? “Everything,” says MEC Climbing Ambassador Tosh Sherkat. “From brightly coloured holds and thick gym mats to faint chalk smudges and rocky uneven ground, the gym and the great outdoors are different beasts.”

Outdoor climbing opens up a whole new world (one we’re obviously huge fans of). If you’ve been thinking about transitioning from plastic holds to cracks, gneiss and limestone, there are a few things to learn before you show up at your local crag.

To help build your knowledge and outdoor climbing etiquette, we connected with experts:

Tips for new climbers with Tommy Caldwell

## 1. Always go with climbers in the know
For your first time outside, make sure you go with someone with **lots of experience**. Find an experienced friend or mentor, or use a trusted guiding service to “show you the ropes.” – Lucas Uchida

Make sure you find someone who’s not just been out once or twice, but an experienced climber who’s spent several seasons climbing at the local crag. **Don’t be afraid to ask around the gym** to find who this person might be! A mentor will be able to teach you the way of the ropes, the ethics of the crag and probably can give you beta for that move you’re stuck on. – Tosh

Be sociable and talk to more experienced climbers – everyone can teach you something. Information sharing is crucial and can help you find new partners. When you go from gym to outdoors, **you must be a sponge** and absorb as much knowledge as possible. – Louis Rousseau

## 2. Belay systems are key
I’ve been climbing for over 10 years, and every time I or my partner ties in, **we do a safety check**. Is your harness double backed? Your knot’s good? Belay device loaded correctly? Knot at the end of the rope? These checks should be as second nature to you as putting on your shoes and chalking up. – Sabrina Chapman

Make checking your knot and belay device **a ritual with your partners** – don’t climb with those who are annoyed by this automatism. Also, use names when communicating with your partner to prevent confusion with other teams around you. – Louis

Belaying is a huge responsibility. Learn the systems, then practice the systems, and then really understand why you’re doing what you’re doing. If you stand 5m away from the wall while belaying, do you understand the implications of this? If you leave out metres of slack between you and your climber, do you understand the implications of this? **Belaying is not a static function**. It requires constant engagement with your climber, yourself and your system. [mic drop] – Sarah Hart

## 3. Plan ahead and prepare
Before you head to the crag, **do your research**. That way you’ll have all the info you need to have a fun and safe climb.

- Find out about local regulations, permit requirements and area closures.
- Carpool to the crag to reduce your impact on the environment and take up less space in the parking lot.
- Read up on your planned routes to ensure you have the proper gear and know how to use it. Pick up a [guidebook](/en/products/climbing/climbing-books/guidebooks/c/303) or check out the local climbing access sites.

Each area has its own rules and guidelines, and most areas usually have some sort of **group that monitors crags** and represents the local climbing community. In Ontario, this group is the [Ontario Alliance of Climbers](https://www.ontarioallianceofclimbers.ca/) – I strongly recommend anyone wanting to climb outside to check out their site. – Lucas



## 4. Respect the risks
When you make the transition from gym to crag, you have to be aware that you are moving from a highly controlled environment in terms of supervision and security to a natural environment where you have to do more risk management. **Take a transition course** to learn how to correctly and properly install top rope anchors – it’s imperative. Knowledge is power, and in the climbing world, knowledge is security. Also, just wear your helmet, okay? – Louis

With top-roping and lead climbing, you need to be careful of things like rockfall, old bolts, potentially bad falls and other risks. With bouldering, there are risks such as poor landing zones and pad management. **Get educated on the increased risks** and how to mitigate those risks effectively. – Lucas

Always make sure to **bring enough pads** when bouldering and discuss any sketchy landing zones with your spotter before climbing. – Cat Carkner

## 5. Dispose of waste properly
Popular crags can get trashed quickly if we don’t all do our part. Leave the crag **cleaner than you found it**, and encourage your crew to do the same.

- Pack out everything you packed in. This includes all trash, and food waste like apple cores.
- For extra crag karma, bring a garbage bag and pack out any other trash you find. “Take five minutes to pick up other garbage, even if it’s not yours,” says Louis.
- When you have to go to the bathroom, use a toilet if possible. That might mean going ahead of time or walking back to the trailhead outhouse.
- For places with no toilet, go to the bathroom 70 big steps away from water sources, trails, campsites and crags. Please don’t pee in cracks or caves. The rain won’t wash it away and then it stinks!
- If you or your pet have to poop, the decision to go with a cathole (hole for poop at least 15cm deep) or [wag bag](/en/product/5027-310/II-Disposable-Bag-For-Solid-Waste) (bag for poop) depends on the environment you’re in – microorganism rich soil breaks down poop at a much different rate than super shallow desert soil. Ask a local what’s best if you’re unsure. Don’t bury toilet paper in a cathole; bring a plastic bag to pack it out. Also carry hand sanitizer to get clean afterward.

**Bring a reusable bag with you** to take out what you brought in (including your poo!) and pick up trash that you notice even if it’s not yours. – Sabrina

I always keep a **dedicated toilet gear stuff sack** in my backpack. It’s got a [lightweight trowel](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/health-and-safety/bath-and-sanitation-products/urination-devices-and-toilet-shovels/c/812), toilet paper, Ziploc bags and hand sanitizer. That way I don’t stress out about pooping on the trail. – Taryn

There’s no “lost and found bin” in the wilderness. It’s your responsibility to **keep track of your things**. I’ve encountered some pretty funny, and also gross things outside like underwear, socks, one climbing shoe, and various articles of clothing. Do a dummie check, it’s easy, and you get to keep all your things. – Sarah



## 6. Be considerate
There are lots of climbers at the crags these days. Be **considerate of others** so everyone can have an awesome day full of sending.

- Avoid popular crags at busy times. You’ll disperse the human impact and maybe find some new routes.
- Don’t monopolize a crag. Finish your climb, then let other groups have a turn.
- Keep your gear contained in one spot rather than spreading out. “I have yet to find a complimentary locker at the crag,” says Sabrina, “keep your packs, coat and shoes tightly together so they’re not spread out and to avoid packing someone else’s stuff.”
- Keep the noise down so others properly communicate with their belayer and hear the sounds of nature.
- If dogs are allowed (always check first), keep them on a leash. Don’t leave them free to chase animals or bother other climbers while you’re high up on the wall.
- Be friendly. Chat with other climbers to get beta, find out if there’s a line-up for a climb, or just make new friends.

The outdoors is a fragile space that needs to be treated gently and respectfully, unlike the back corner of the gym where that pink 5.10 just went up. Stay on designated trails and don’t take short cuts to get to the warm-up first. Keep your group small so the area at the base of the cliff doesn’t erode. – Sabrina

### On music at the crag
Fun fact: when we reached out to our Ambassador team, nearly every single one of them came back with a point about no music at the crag. “One thing that might elude many gym climbers is that while music is always played at the gym, it’s a no-go for the crag – so keep your beats for the car,” says Tosh.

Do not bring a sound system outside; communication between partners is an important safety feature that prevents accidents, and it’s hard to be heard over thumping beats or slick guitar solos. In addition, others around you may be leading for the first time, sketching out a tiny foot jib, or just relishing the twittering of birds. Keep your voices low and be mindful that you are sharing this area. – Sabrina

I sound like a real hard-ass here, and believe me, back in the day, I was all over music at the crag. As our sport grows and we find more and more people in small outdoor spaces, it’s imperative that we’re respectful of each other, and maintain an orderly and quiet space. And I don’t say this to sound boring. If a crag is busy, loud and chaotic, it poses real danger to being able to successfully communicate with your climber or belayer. – Sarah

## 7. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
Hike, climb, camp, and hang out on durable surfaces like rock, gravel and bare dirt. That way you’ll protect fragile vegetation.

- Use established trails to access crags and descent routes.
- Unpack your gear and place bouldering crash pads on durable surfaces so you won’t trample plants.
- Avoid using trees as anchors. If you do build a tree anchor, use wide webbing slings instead of running the rope directly around the trunk.
- If you’re staying overnight, use a designated campsite instead of creating a new one.



## 8. Leave what you find
One of the best parts of outdoor climbing is spending time in nature. Leave the crag natural so others can enjoy it too. Plus it keeps ecosystems intact, which our friend Mother Earth will appreciate.

- Leave rocks, plants, and artifacts where you find them.
- Keep your chalk use to a minimum to avoid marking up the rock. Brush off tick marks when you’re done.

## 9. Minimize campfire impacts
If campfires are permitted at your designated campsite and you choose to have a fire, keep it responsible to reduce your impact. Fires scar the soil, and can lead to overharvesting of firewood or devastating wildfires.

- Check fire regulations in advance.
- Gather firewood from dead branches you find on the ground. Don’t chop down trees – they don’t burn well anyway.
- Use an existing fire ring.
- Keep your campfire small to conserve firewood and make it easier to extinguish.
- Put it out completely when you’re done. Make sure the coals are cold and won’t reignite.

## 10. Respect wildlife
You’re just visiting the crag, but animals live there full time. Respect them and their home.

- Be careful with hand and foot placements as you climb. You don’t want to disturb a bird’s nest or get bitten by hidden wildlife.
- Respect seasonal route closures for nesting birds like peregrine falcons.
- Don’t feed wildlife. Squirrels and birds can be cute, but don’t give in! It’s not good for them. This includes keeping your food and trash secure while you climb so animals can’t get into it.

## 11. Enjoy the learning phase
Climbing outside opens up a whole new world beyond the gym – take your time to learn the right skills, and enjoy the newness that comes with being a beginner again. “The focus doesn’t have to be on grades,” says Cat, “it can be on trying out aesthetic lines that appeal to you! Have fun and enjoy the time in nature.”

Crag etiquette: the do’s and don’ts of climbing outside

## Outdoor Pride events across Canada


MEC is collaborating with LGBQT2S+ groups to host outdoor Pride events across the country. Check out what’s happening near you – there’s everything from Rise and Shine Pride Hikes to a Love Floats Pride Parade on the water.

One example of local groups we’re supporting is Queer Outdoors Vancouver, who aim to connect LGBQT2S+ outdoor adventurers. “The purpose of the group is to build queer outdoors community, plan trips, and share skills and resources,” Mik Turje, the group administrator said, “so that more of us can get outside, learn new skills, and feel safe and comfortable while we do it.”

The best ways to celebrate Pride outside

Camping season is upon us, and with it comes visions of marshmallows roasting on an open fire (or however the old saying goes). But what happens to your dreams of the wild life when there’s a fire ban in effect? Can you enjoy a night under the stars without a campfire to curl up by? Is it even worth packing up the car without the prospect of rubbing two sticks together? And what are you going to do with that family size bag of Jet-Puffeds?

Well, contrary to what you may have heard, camping isn’t all about the campfire. In fact, with this list of good alternatives and distractions, you might just decide to go fire-free on your next trip, even if there isn’t a fire ban (okay, maybe not, but they’re good ideas nonetheless). ## Take in a light show


Take advantage of full darkness to brush up on your constellation identification skills. “I’m big into star watching, and you don’t need a fire for that!” says Boris Issaev of [Parkbus](https://www.parkbus.ca/), one of MEC’s [community partners](/en/explore/partnerships). Without the added light pollution of a campfire, you’ll be able to see everything there is to see in the night sky above you. Need a cheat sheet? ## Make your own mood lighting
Making your own camp lantern is easier than you think. Just fill up a see-through Nalgene bottle with some water and wrap a headlamp around it with the light facing in toward the bottle – backcountry mood lighting achieved. Pool resources to hang them up to brighten up the whole campsite, or go for a walk around the campground by lantern-light. Any budding entomologists will find camp lanterns perfect to spot cool insects that might shy away from an open flame.

## See your name in lights
Boris from Parkbus also recommends busting out the headlamps and flashlights to try your hand at a little light-writing photography. “It looks really neat at night, and you can take some really cool photos with it,” says Boris. Spell out a message for your friends back home, get this year’s holiday card taken care of early or commemorate a campsite in-joke. Show us your best ones using the hashtag #goodtimesoutside.



## Snuggle up
Be sure to pack layers, as temperatures tend to dip at night, even in summertime fire ban season. Start with a solid base layer, make sure to bring a lightweight fleece and don’t forget a cozy blanket to insulate you from the ground, or curl up in for extra warmth.



S’mores who? Defeat boredom and hunger in one fell swoop with a portable ice cream maker that doubles as a game of catch. Add cream, sugar and vanilla in one end, ice and rock salt in the other, toss it around the campsite for 20 minutes and voila! Boris from Parkbus also recommends a good quality propane stove for all your camp cooking needs. He says, “Cooking over a nice stove is actually easier than cooking over fire in my books.” Get inspired with camp kitchen recipes and cook like you’re back home in the backcountry.

There’s a common camping misconception that heading out of delivery range means forgoing doughy, cheesy goodness in favour of a few nights under the stars. You can have a Neapolitan deluxe with peppercorn ranch, or you can brush up on your big dipper identification skills. But both? At once? The stuff of dreams.

In fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Pizza is to camping as s’mores are to… well, camping. With the right gear and a few good ideas you can whip up a pie that’ll have your camp buddies saying, “Nice one, dude,” in no time. Here are a couple of our favourite methods, arranged in order of fanciness from total newbie to pizza pro.

**Great news for pizza fans**: Even if you can’t make it to a campsite, you can practice most of these pizza methods cooking at home. Use your cast iron skillet in your oven or set up a camping grill in your backyard to test new ingredient combos in preparation for future camping trips.

## Method 1: Straight on the grill


Easiest with a pre-made base. Assemble your toppings, fire up the grill and you’re ready to go. You can even skip the pizza dough and use flatbread, naan, pita or even English muffins (save the rest to have for breakfast with the [best cup of camp coffee you’ve ever made](/en/article/a-coffee-addicts-guide-to-camp-coffee)).

**Fanciness level**: Definitely classier than a pizza pocket

**Pro tips**: Lay some tinfoil over your grill to prevent any cheese-melting messiness. We’ve even heard of people skewering refrigerated pizza dough and bite-sized ingredients on kebab sticks to roast ‘em like marshmallows!

Just one more thing your one-and-done camp pan can do. Roll out your dough and press it into an oiled skillet. Top with pizza sauce, cheese and your favourite ingredients. Cover with a lid or some foil and cook over your campfire or grill until the top is crispy and brown.

No, not that kind. Press your dough into the base of the oven (if using a high-walled oven, line with parchment paper to streamline the pizza extraction process once it’s cooked). Try to use a small amount of sauce and low-moisture ingredients (think meats, mushrooms, olives and less juicy veg like peppers) to keep things crispy rather than steamy during cooking. Set the oven over your fire or camp stove, cover with the lid, and place hot coals or stones on top. Let convection do the rest!

If you live by the expression, “it’s about the journey, not the destination,” cycle tours are the way to go when you’re travelling. When I was in Cuba, biking was one of the only ways to get away from the typical resort-town experience. In Taiwan, cycling gave me the chance to visit remote mountain towns and drink tea with local farmers. Travelling by bike offers you a totally different experience than backpacking or riding a tour bus – and not just when it comes to getting from point A to point B.

## 1. You make real connections


Let’s be honest – being stuck on a tour bus and breezing in and out of a town with barely enough time to get a selfie isn’t fun. Exploring a city by bike slows things down and gives you a lots of opportunities to connect with locals. In countries where cycling is the norm, people will stop to chat about your route or gear. And in places where long-distance cycling is less common, people may approach you to ask, “Why?!” Either way, cycling opens the door to all kinds of cross-cultural adventures.

## 2. You go at your own pace


Being on a bike gives you complete control over the pace of a trip. It’s easy to pull over and stop when you see something interesting or just feel like taking a break. While cycling through Taiwan, I often stopped at small temples, neat-looking rock formations and roadside fruit stands. You can choose to take a slow, leisurely ride, but you can also push your body – you might even surprise yourself, as your fitness levels improve along the way. And you don’t have to be an extreme athlete to experience the joy of cresting the next hill.

## 3. You get to refuel (lots)
One of my favourite things about cycle touring is that you’re hungry all the time. It’s the perfect excuse to try new foods, so you wouldn’t do wrong to pick a bike touring location based on cuisines you want to try. Countries like Taiwan and Vietnam are known for fast, affordable and delicious food that can you can pick up at roadside stops. And I’ll admit that a double scoop of authentic Italian gelato tastes a lot better when you feel like you’ve earned it.

## Why cycle with a group?


Travelling by bike isn’t always easy, and yes, on some days you’ll likely feel pushed to your limits. But joining a group tour increases your chances of riding safely and comfortably. Here are just a few reasons why setting out on a group bike tour can be great:

- **Mechanical help**: Sometimes you get lucky and can go hundreds of kilometres without so much as a flat tire. Other times, you may feel plagued by mechanical issues which can be frustrating if you don’t have the skills or tools to get yourself going quickly again. Travelling with a group tour removes this stress, so you can focus on the ride.
- **Excellent route choices**: Large highways, steep grades and distances that seem doable as a day ride but can actually be much more difficult (especially when you’re carrying a lot of weight) are a few things to be aware of for route planning. Reading blogs or hiring a local guide can help you find more enjoyable (and realistic) routes.
- **Extra support:**Before you head out, you should practice riding with loads similar to what you’ll be carrying on a cycle tour – fill up those panniers! Check in with your tour company to find out what kind of support is available. Many of them provide vans that carry your gear to lighten your load.
- **Logistics sorted:**There’s nothing wrong with wanting to have a hot shower and a comfortable place to sleep at the end of the day. Booking ahead or riding with a group tour can help with those details.
- **Advice from other riders**: Even small pinches or strains can feel different after several hours in the saddle, so it’s important that you listen to your body. Getting your [bike properly fitted](/en/explore/fitting-your-bike) (whether it’s a touring bike, mountain bike, or recumbent bike) is helpful before a long tour, but fellow riders will be able to share their tips and tricks along the way, too.

When you’re travelling by bike, you get to immerse yourself in the surroundings (the smells, the weather, the bumps in the road), connect with the locals, and move at your own pace. But most of all, you get to appreciate how you got there, feeling the subtle changes in terrain and climate along the way.

If you’ve never travelled to Vietnam, then you’re in for an unforgettable trip. Be prepared for delicious seafood, fantastic coffee and jaw-dropping scenery. The country is great for roaming travellers, and you’ll find plenty of activities to fill your days. Go armed with these tips, which are also helpful for backpacking in other Southeast Asian destinations, like Thailand, Malaysia or the Philippines.

## 1. Bring H2O wherever you go
The general rule of thumb in Vietnam is to avoid tap water. Some people stick to bottled water, but you can be more environmentally friendly by bringing your own [reusable water bottle](/en/ideal-for/travel/products/camping-and-hiking/kitchen-and-hydration/water-bottles-and-water-treatment/water-bottles/c/1233) and [water treatment system](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/health-and-safety/water-filters-treatment-and-tablets/c/1236?b=100-1549-1267-1563).

It’s so easy to get dehydrated when you travel, especially in hot climates. If you notice yourself feeling cranky, light-headed or dry in the mouth, then you’re probably already dehydrated.

## 2. Learn to say hello and thank you
If you speak English and don’t have experience with the Vietnamese language, it can be tricky to pick up. Many locals will have a good grasp of the English language in touristy areas, but finding English-speakers in more remote areas of Vietnam is difficult. Try a few basic Vietnamese words – it goes a long way. You’d also be surprised at how much you can communicate simply by hand signals and body language (and don’t forget to smile). Feeling motivated? ## 3. Stock up on sunscreen and repellant
Sure, you can find [sunscreen](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/health-and-safety/sun-protection/c/1216) and [bug repellent](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/health-and-safety/bug-spray-and-bug-nets/bug-spray-and-insect-repellent/c/500) once you land but they’ll be much more expensive and of varying qualities. If you’re taking your backpack as a carry-on, don’t forget to follow the 100ml rule for liquids and gels.

**Pro traveller tip**: If you burn easily or are running low on sunscreen, avoid the sun from 11am to 3pm (peak scorching hours).

## 4. Combine history with activity
One of the best ways to take in all the ancient structures and scenery? On the move. Sign up for a cycling tour (bikes are big in Vietnam) to combine the expertise of a local guide with enough activity to work up an appetite for *bún chả* (BBQ pork with rice vermicelli) or *cà phê trứng*(fluffy egg coffee). Roll past pagodas and temples, eucalyptus forest and rice fields, as you explore cities and countrysides.

Study up on general prices, make an offer (try 20–30% below asking as a starting point) and be prepared to walk away if you don’t get a fair deal. Be alert that prices in the tourist areas are usually very high, but don’t let it prevent you from experiencing Vietnam’s unique adventures or connecting with the locals.
