Outdoor Tips, Tricks, Inspiration and Activities | MEC Blog

2022 was a huge year for giving back to the outdoors – and we’re here to celebrate that. Did you know that MEC continues to dedicate nearly $1 million each year to our [Outdoor Impact](/en/explore/outdoor-impact) program? That’s on top of the over **$48 million given to outdoor causes** since our community giveback started back in 1987.

Check out what MEC and our Outdoor Impact partners have been up to in 2022 below – from avalanche safety training grants to kids’ mountain biking programs, it’s a huge list of highlights.

Speaking of highlights, we want to say a big thank you for Giving Tuesday: with your support of Sock Week, MEC and Smartwool were able to **donate $15,000 to the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society**. It’s just one of the many ways our community has come together to give back to the outdoors this year.

## Events that give back
This year, in-person events returned to MEC. We were so excited to welcome people in stores with [The Empowerment Festival](/en/explore/the-empowerment-festival), [An Evening with Tommy Caldwell](/en/article/we-spent-3-days-with-tommy-caldwell-yes-it-was-awesome), [Pride Climbs](/en/explore/pride-climb-events) and [Season Openers](/en/explore/season-opener). We even kept the virtual fun rolling with [Climb for Climate](/en/explore/climb-for-climate). 

In total, our **2022 events raised $53,836** for groups like The Lady Alliance, Protect Our Winters Canada, the Climbers’ Access Society of BC and more. Big thanks to everyone who joined us – stay tuned for more!

## Gear that gives back
As an outdoor retailer, donating gear is one of the most effective ways we can help break down barriers that prevent more people from getting outside and connecting to nature. 

In 2022, we launched Queer Gear Kits, a new annual initiative, which provided a total of **$17,000 in funding and camping gear from MEC for four LGBTQ2S+ community groups** getting more folks outside. 

This year, as part of our continued journey to Truth and Reconciliation, we donated **$40,000 worth of outdoor gear and technical clothing to four Indigenous communities** to support land and water based outdoor programs.

## Nationwide partners
We’re proud to partner with incredible Canadian organizations all year long. See what initiatives they’ve been working on in 2022, with support from MEC.

### The Alpine Club of Canada
With 24 regional sections, year-round mountain adventures and a big system of backcountry huts, the [Alpine Club of Canada](/en/explore/alpine-club-of-canada) has a 116-year history of getting into the alpine. 

**Peaks of 2022:**
- Developed and advanced the diversity and inclusion offerings of their **Mountain Adventures Program** (check them out – it’s a growing list).
- Had over 80 participants in their **women and non-binary, BIPOC, BIWOC and body-positive camps** and instructional courses – awesome!

### Association of Canadian Mountain Guides
Since 2013, MEC has partnered with the [Association of Canadian Mountain Guides](/en/explore/association-of-canadian-mountain-guides), an organization that trains and certifies guides and instructors in climbing, backcountry skiing, hiking and more. We’re proud to support their Adventure Access program to connect young people with ACMG instructors for safe adventuring outside.

**Peaks of 2022:**
- **DEI training** for ACMG members and instructors, including 6 professional development workshops.
- The **Adventure Access Program** supported a ton of groups, including Banff Pride, The Crush Collective, Vancouver Queer Climbers, Multicultural Trail Network, Soul of Mistaki and the Calgary Board of Education.

### Avalanche Canada
[Avalanche Canada](/en/explore/avalanche-canada) has been a valued MEC partner since 2001. A not-for-profit organization dedicated to public avalanche safety, they issue daily avalanche forecasts, offer avalanche awareness and education programs, and support instructors of Avalanche Canada training programs.

**Peaks of 2022:** 
- For the second year running, the **MEC Avalanche Safety Grant** provided Avalanche Canada Training courses to four organizations serving IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour) communities.
- **More than 12,000 participants** completed a course through the Avalanche Training Program in the 2021–22 season ([see this year’s courses](https://www.avalanche.ca/training)).

### Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society
An MEC partner since 1988, [CPAWS](/en/explore/canadian-parks-and-wilderness-society) is Canada’s only nationwide charity dedicated solely to the protection of public land, freshwater and ocean with a strong national and regional presence across the country.

- **Launch of [We Can’t Wait](https://cpaws.org/wecantwait/)**, a new interactive web hub created to help Canada reach its 30X30 goal: protecting 30% of land and ocean in Canada by 2030.

### Leave No Trace 
An MEC partner since 2006, [Leave No Trace Canada](/en/explore/leave-no-trace-canada) is dedicated to raising awareness for the importance of respecting Canada’s wilderness with research-based solutions to protect and enjoy our natural areas.

Principle 2: Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces - Leave No Trace Canada

**Peaks of 2022:**
- In one of many Truth and Reconciliation efforts, Leave No Trace staff and volunteers took part in **cultural awareness training** with Tataga Indigenous Consulting Firm. 
- Launched a **new video series** to share the 7 principles of Leave No Trace – watch one of them above and find the rest on their [video training page](https://leavenotrace.ca/video-training-page/). 

### Parkbus
Since 2010, MEC has supported [Parkbus](/en/explore/parkbus) to connect people with nature through bus services to national and provincial parks from major cities across Canada. MEC partners with Parkbus to run two special programs focused on community building, education, inclusion and diversity in the outdoors: [ActiveDays](https://activedays.parkbus.ca/) and [NatureLink](https://www.parkbus.ca/naturelink).

**Peaks of 2022:**
- Brought **more than 1,700 people** to parks and conservation areas through ActiveDays programming.
- **Expanded outdoor programs** to include canoeing, paddling, apple picking, maple syrup harvesting and mindfulness activities.

### Parks Canada
[Parks Canada](/en/explore/parks-canada) and MEC have worked together since 2011 to offer Learn-to Camp, a program that builds confidence and skills so that new campers can discover the joy of tents and s’mores.

**Peaks of 2022:**
- Hosted **more than 1,000 [Learn-to Camp events](https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/serapprocher-connect/ltc-dlc)** (in-person and virtual), including 40 [overnight events](https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/serapprocher-connect/ltc-dlc/nuit-night) to help more than 65,000 folks get outdoors. 
- **Grew a fleet of regional programs** like Ottawa’s new Learn-to Paddle activities and the expansion of Learn-to Paddle activities in Montreal.

### Protect Our Winters Canada
MEC was a founding Canadian partner of [Protect Our Winters Canada](/en/explore/protect-our-winters-canada) when they started in 2018. They’re committed to uniting the outdoor community to advocate for policy solutions to climate change.

**Peaks of 2022:**
- Launch of their biggest program so far: a membership program called [**Game On Climate Change**](https://www.protectourwinters.ca/game_on). It’s a first-of-its-kind program to incentivize and mobilize over 40,000 members to act for climate policy reform – and it’s [free to join](https://www.protectourwinters.ca/become_a_climate_athlete).
- MEC also helped POW with fundraisers like the **Climb for Climate Challenge**, which raised $25,000 during Earth Month.

### Spirit North
Spirit North has worked with MEC since 2018 and is dedicated to empowering and inspiring Indigenous children and youth through power of sport and play. Working in partnership with communities, Spirit North co-creates and delivers regular land-based sport and activity programs designed to reduce barriers to participation such as geographical isolation and socio-economic limitations, while integrating community traditions, values, and beliefs.

**Peaks of 2021/22:**
- Delivered programs to over **5,400 Indigenous youth in 61 communities**.
- New Cannondale bikes were donated to Outma Sqilx’W Cultural School (Penticton Indian Band) to support the **Spirit North Mountain bike program**.

### Take Me Outside
Since 2011, we’ve partnered with [Take Me Outside](/en/explore/take-me-outside), a non-profit organization that works collaboratively with educators and school boards to encourage children and youth to spend more time outside.

**Peaks of 2022:**
- [**Take Me Outside Day**](https://takemeoutside.ca/tmoday/): 6,500 teachers and 340,000 students participated with speaker presentations from Indigenous knowledge keepers, Olympic athletes, authors and environmental activists.
- [**Take Me Outside for Learning Challenge**](https://takemeoutside.ca/take-me-outside-for-learning-challenge/): more than 5,000 teachers committed to taking their learning outside consistently with students for the school year.
 
### On a local level
In 2022, we worked with local partners across the country, like [**Hike MTL**](https://www.hikemtl.com/), [**Belay All**](https://www.belayall.com/), [**Avalanche Quebec**](https://avalanchequebec.ca/en/) and the [**North Shore Mountain Bike Association**](/en/explore/local-partners) (NSMBA). 

MEC is proud to have been a supporter of NSMBA projects over the years, and we’re stoked to work with them again. We’re the sponsor for Expresso trail, which had 4 trail improvement days, thanks to 45 volunteers and 150 hours of work in the dirt.

Giving Tuesday: Moving mountains together

When you choose Fair Trade Factory Certified™ products, your purchase helps positively impact workers’ lives, their communities and the environment. Fair Trade certification not only aligns with MEC’s goals around responsible sourcing, but it helps us go beyond auditing to establishing fair wages for workers and ensures that their rights are respected.

The MEC Label Fair Trade collection began in 2014 with women’s t-shirts and a single factory. Thanks to its popularity and impact, our Fair Trade collection has grown. Today, there are two Fair Trade Certified factories making MEC Label products, and we’ve nominated two more of our suppliers for Fair Trade Certification. To date, MEC has sent a total of over $320,000 to factory workers. 

The range of our Fair Trade Certified products has expanded too, and now has everything from hiking pants and merino shirts to kids’ clothes and hoodies. Something we’re super excited about with the two new factories we’ve nominated? When their certification process is complete, it will mean we’ll be able to offer our first Fair Trade Certified backpacks.

## Why does Fair Trade matter?
We often hear that people know Fair Trade is a good thing, but that they don’t really know exactly how it works – or what it means for the people working at Fair Trade Certified factories.

Here’s a deeper look to help you understand how your choices make a difference around the world. 

Globally, there are roughly 60–70 million garment workers and over 75% of them are women. Many of these people are exposed to excessive overtime hours, low compensation, gender-based discrimination, and environmental risks. Fair Trade was created as a way to make a difference for workers in these industries, push businesses to do better, and give people a choice about the type of industry they want to support. 

A Fair Trade Certified seal means a product was manufactured under safe labour conditions. It also means it contributes to community projects funded by financial premiums. For every MEC Label Fair Trade Certified product, we pay an extra amount (known as a premium) that goes into a [community development fund](https://www.fairtradecertified.org/what-we-do/community-development-funds/). This fund is a bank account managed by a committee of workers. Committee members identify potential ways to spend the funds based on household and community needs, and all workers vote to determine which project goes ahead that year for their location.

## How has MEC’s involvement helped workers directly?
Over the years, Fair Trade premiums from MEC Label have funded a wide range of projects that directly impacted people’s lives. Some projects funded:

- Household items, such as a refrigerator, fan, blender, washing machines, and food preparation items. These items cut down on the time spent doing chores or preparing food, increase time with family, and improve quality of life.
- Water filters for clean, bacteria-free drinking water.
- Language classes at the factory to support migrant workers.
- A pesticide-free vegetable garden.
- Fitness equipment for their workplace to encourage health, wellness and camaraderie for their team. Plus a weekly fitness class with incentives like a t-shirts, running shoes and a towel for continuous participation.
- Emergency cash payments to meet critical needs due to factory closures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

By investing in Fair Trade practices, MEC ensures garment workers have safe working conditions, a voice in the workplace, higher earnings and equal treatment for women.  

## What’s next for Fair Trade at MEC?
Because we’ve seen the difference Fair Trade has made for workers in our supply chain, we’ve set goals to grow the Fair Trade program at MEC and increase our impact. In 2022, we’ve nominated two of our packs suppliers to become Fair Trade Certified. This will mean approximately 4,200 additional workers will be able benefit from the Fair Trade program and premium.

## Want to help and make a difference?
A few ways consumers can help:
- Look for the label. The program only works when you actually purchase the products. Seek out Fair Trade goods in all your shopping – apparel, home goods, beverages, produce.
- Spread the word. It all starts with a simple act of sharing. Tell your family and friends why you support Fair Trade.
- Get involved. As they say, think globally and act locally. Join or start a Fair Trade Campaign in your community to help grow awareness, availability and commitment to Fair Trade.

## A few of my favourite MEC Label Fair Trade products

A deeper look at how your choices make a difference around the world.

The real deal behind Fair Trade at MEC

Happy Sendtember! In a month that’s prime for climbing, we wanted to highlight an MEC staffer who recently had the chance to attend the fifteenth annual Arc’teryx Climbing Academy in Squamish, BC.

What makes this festival such a stellar one? The chance to climb, meet other climbers, check out new gear and practice skills in a dedicated weekend. After all, when you ask the best of the best climbers, even they’ll admit that there’s something they have yet to learn. MEC and Arc’teryx go way back – we were one of the first places to sell their early climbing gear – so it was the perfect event to send a lucky staffer to attend (yep, definitely a huge staffer perk).

Read on to meet MEC Montreal staffer Jules and find out about what it was like at his first Arc’teryx Academy.

## First up: tell us about your climbing.
I’ve been climbing for almost three years now, mostly indoor bouldering because I don’t have a car to go outside consistently as much as I want. I also do a bit of sport climbing, which I like a lot, but I prefer the more power-based climbing that bouldering provides.

## What did you learn from clinics at the Academy?
One of the clinics I did was about crack climbing, and I now have a lot of exercises to do to keep getting better in this area. I learned how to jam my hands in different angles, how to decide if you go with your left or right hand, if you go thumb down or up and how to see the best part of the crack to jam in. Lots of mini tricks that’ll help me to become way more effective and precise.

## Anything you’ll incorporate into your climbing right away? 
One takeaway was more on the psychology side of climbing. Moving forward, when a training session goes bad and I just feel incredibly weak, I think I’ll pause the training for another day and try to have fun instead. Usually, the fun in climbing for me is to climb hard things and be exhausted at the end. But seeing so many people at the Academy who love climbing as much as me climbing 5.10s or V3s made me want to try to take it easy sometimes. I’ll never be a World Cup climber – I started too late in my life – so why not try to be a little more patient and enjoy it even more?

> “My favourite film at the event was *Free as Can Be*, the story of how Jordan Cannon (an upcoming trad climber) helped big-wall legend Marc Hudon free climb Freerider at 63 years old, while Marc acts as a mentor for Jordan at the same time.”

## What caught your eye in terms of gear at the event?
The most impressive was the ultralight climbing ledge by Grade VII, it’s absolutely nuts! They also do some great haul packs. If you plan to do some big walling, seriously look at what they have to offer. I also tested [Camp ultralight ice axes](/en/product/6010-906/corsa-ice-axe?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=camp&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvZCZBhCiARIsAPXbajsJfQ2m9SV08o4Ic2Vyp0rbVJhkKvWEvBHQH26fvTAQRIeJUkSnffYaAls9EALw_wcB&colour=NO_COLOUR) – pretty impressive. 

Plus, I discovered [Midnight Lightning](/en/products/climbing/rock-climbing/chalk-and-chalk-bags/c/954?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=midnight%20lightning), a company that tries to be the most eco-responsible possible. They have climbing chalk sourced with sea water and distributed in a plant-based packaging. Their [Chalktopus](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6023-123/chalktopus) was the cutest thing I saw at the entire festival.

Finally, Arc’teryx showed us their new idea of repairing jackets with new colourful panels instead of sending a new one to customers. It’s better for the environment and it makes your old jacket filled with memories even more unique.

## Did you ever think climbing would become what it is now? 
When I started climbing a few years ago, I was impressed by how many people were in the gym. I’d never really heard about this sport, and I was surrounded by at least a hundred people on a Tuesday afternoon. During the pandemic, it got even bigger. Now if you want to climb in Montreal on a weekday evening, the gyms are almost always at maximum capacity. I think it’ll just keep getting more popular.

## What advice would you give to new climbers?
A lot of climbers start in the gym, and no one cares if you’re a beginner. Don’t hesitate to climb your V1 or V2 in front of V8–V9 climbers. When I started, I was really intimidated by the better climbers, but now that I’m at the level of the people that scared me, I can assure you that you won’t bother anyone while trying your V2. In fact, it’s exciting to see someone new trying hard to accomplish his goal. Have fun. 

And if you shift from indoor climbing to outside, lower your expectations. It can be very frustrating to climb only V2 outside while you can climb V6 inside. It’s normal – just have fun with your friends. 

> “I think indoor bouldering will grow faster than any other type of climbing. You need a pair of shoes, chalk, and you’re good to go.”

## Favourite climbing shoe?
I climb 80% of the time in [Scarpa Dragos](/en/product/5048-090/drago-rock-shoes), because I mostly boulder indoors and they’re the best shoes for that in my opinion. I also think the best shoe out there right now is the La Sportiva Solution Comp. You can do anything with them and nothing compares to them in overhangs (my favourite). You can push hard on the smallest footholds and it feels so easy. *(Note: here’s a [similar La Sportiva model](/en/product/5056-064/solution-rock-shoes) available on mec.ca)*

## Most legendary route in the world, in your eyes? 
Action Directe, the first 9a climbed in 1991 by Wolfgang Gullich. Just the fact that he invented the campus board to climb this thing shows how advanced he was in comparison to the other climbers of his generation. Also, the crux of this route is absolutely ridiculous, and I think it’s one of the most legendary routes in the world for a reason.

## Any goals you have in mind? 
I dream of completing Action Directe for sport climbing and Off the Wagon for bouldering. I also dream of being able to compete in the Canadian championships and just to climb around to world to see what nature has to offer.

MEC staffer Jules gives the scoop on what it’s like to attend this fest.

Why pros and beginners flock to the Arc’teryx Climbing Academy

When you flip through the pages of a climbing magazine or peek into the office of a climbing gym, who do you see? Who’s designing routes and building careers in climbing?

“Although almost 50% of climbers are women, they are largely underrepresented in the media, in climbing competitions and in central positions such as route-setting, coaching and management,” says Alexa Fay, general manager and co-founder of [The B.I.G. Initiative](https://thebiginitiative.ca/en/). The non-profit organization supports and trains women to take on leadership roles in the climbing industry – and it has big goals.

## The big idea behind The B.I.G. Initiative

“We aim to help the climbing industry reach gender parity in typically male-dominated jobs,” Alexa says. Elaiza Datar, outdoor program coordinator for The B.I.G. Initiative, explains further, “Having more diverse representation in climbing leadership is important to unlocking more possibilities and innovations that can serve the wider climbing community.”

The organization initially focused on route-setting workshops, training women to design and build bouldering problems and gym routes – crucial skills for a career in climbing. So far, they’ve introduced 64 women to route-setting and trained 24 advanced route-setters. 

“People with different body types or different strengths are usually going to set differently,” says Alexa. “And that’s a good thing! If you have more diversity in who is setting, then you’re going to end up with a better, more rounded, more diverse product that is going to cater to a wider range of people.”

## Taking The B.I.G. Initiative outside
When COVID shut down climbing gyms, The B.I.G. Initiative pivoted to offer outdoor climbing workshops. As they planned a course in Quebec, Elaiza immediately thought of climbing instructor [Emma Contaoe](https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/emma-contaoe), MEC Ambassador and owner of Climbing Escapes. Emma suggested expanding the course into a two-day beginner climbing and camping retreat, which quickly became a reality.

After meeting at MEC Marché Central, 12 participants and 2 instructors travelled up to Montagne d’Argent in La Conception, where they met Emma for dinner and a campfire. After camping overnight, the group enjoyed a “feast of a breakfast,” according to Alexa, and headed to the crag. Emma and another guide, Marie, gave everyone instruction on knots and how to belay a partner.

Some participants had never climbed outside before — and some had never climbed at all, says Alexa. “We also had some people who used to climb and had stopped, and this was their way to start climbing again.”

We asked Alexa and Elaiza to tell us a bit more about why their work is so important.

### What kind of changes do you want to see in the climbing world? 

Alexa: “We want to see more women in leadership roles. We want to see women get the respect they deserve in their sport, but also in their work. We want the women who are already working in the industry to get more visibility, in hopes that they can then inspire others to see themselves in leadership positions in the industry.”

Elaiza: “As a person of colour, I would love to see more diversity in the climbing world. Climbing can have a high barrier to entry and being able to climb is a privilege that a lot of people don’t have. It means a lot to me to have brought in female BIPOC climbing guides and instructors in leading our outdoor climbing events. This kind of visibility of BIPOC instructors can be important for those who aren’t used to seeing people that look like them at the climbing gyms and crags.”

From route-setting workshops to outdoor courses, The B.I.G. Initiative is supporting and creating opportunities for underrepresented climbers.

Spotlight on The B.I.G. Initiative: women, climbing, unlimited stoke

We were pretty dang excited to welcome Tommy Caldwell and the [Edelrid](/en/products/c/300/brands/edelrid) crew to BC for a jam-packed few days of activities. Judging by the massive line-up outside our Vancouver store, the MEC community was pumped too.

So what do you get up to when a climbing legend comes to town? You *CUDDLE*, talk climbing gear and hit Electric Avenue. A massive thank you to Tommy and Edelrid for a fun time with MEC members and staffers – check out the highlights below.

## Day 1: sold-out event
A full house! The evening talk with Tommy sold out in a record-breaking 16 hours. It was great to welcome the climbing community to our store, and all event proceeds went to the [Climbers’ Access Society of British Columbia](https://www.access-society.ca/) – **$4,136 in total**. 


## *CUDDLE* film screening
Attendees got to see Tommy Caldwell’s latest film *CUDDLE*, which covered his latest adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park with Alex Honnold and Adam Stack. 

Tommy told us that it was the first time on film that he’s “truly getting his ass kicked”. Somehow, they managed laughs between a missed resupply, a serious lack of pants, climbing exposed terrain by phone flashlight overnight, and plenty of gut-wrenching hours.

During the Q&A session, Tommy weighed in all kinds of topics: weather in the Rockies, environmental advocacy, testing the heck out of products, a 6mm simul-climbing system (for the record, not tested, not approved, not recommended), bringing kids on adventures, risk assessment, and most importantly, the snacks Adam Stack rescued them with during the CDUL (answer: enormous burritos).

Huge thanks to local groups that joined us: [Vancouver Climbers Association](https://www.vanclimbers.com/), [BelayAll](https://www.belayall.com/), [Protect Our Winters Canada](/en/explore/protect-our-winters-canada) (POW Canada) and the [Climbers’ Access Society of BC](https://www.access-society.ca/). 

Tommy shared how he likes to support at least three non-profits at a time, including the POW Climb athlete alliance. “They’re doing great work on policy to make a real difference for climate change.” We highly recommend checking out POW Canada or your local climbing group – protecting access and the environment keeps crags, cliffs and climbing areas going.


There was plenty of time to say hi, snap a pic, and get gear or books signed. An enormous stack of raffle prizes from Edelrid’s Climb Green collection rounded out the night, and the grand prize was a morning climbing session with Tommy the next day. Nice!

## Day 2: rise and climb
Bright and early the next day, raffle winners joined Tommy and folks from Edelrid, MEC Label, The Hive, POW Canada and the Vancouver Climbers’ Association at the store.

Edelrid and their team from Germany chatted about developing their Climb Green collection and the future of more sustainable climbing gear. They’re a leader in this space and are proof that sustainability doesn’t mean compromising safety or performance. Recycled rope, PFC-free dry-treated ropes, and bluesign®-approved harnesses are just a few of the wins. Plus, they hinted at a major announcement for 2023.

Coffee, carbs and crushing to start the day. Yep, MEC Vancouver has a bouldering wall – stay tuned for future invites to join us.

## Day 3: Squamish climb session
To round out the visit, Edelrid, Tommy and MEC staffers went to Squamish for an experiential product knowledge session. We were lucky to have three people from Edelrid Germany – the CEO and owner, head of product, and global sales manager.


Product knowledge sessions (a.k.a. PKs) are one of the ways staffers get experience with gear. “Everyone was very excited to get an informal PK where you get to try and use the products in the field, and learn directly from the Edelrid team,” said Graham, MEC staffer and climbing product expert. 

“One of the things that Edelrid developer spoke about is how they focus on the 3 Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) when creating products,” Graham shared. “He emphasized how important reduce and reuse are, and that recycle is a last resort because the product is already made and therefore energy intensive.”

“We spent the whole day at the Electric Avenue crag, and safety was a top priority with a hired guide and the experienced Edelrid crew giving everyone the attention and support they needed,” said Graham. 

“There was a wide range of climbers and some big moments – we even had a staffer climb their first route ever (ever ever) belayed by Tommy Caldwell… not many people can say that.”

“Another staffer was coming back to climbing after a two-year hiatus, and found confidence and support from everyone,” Graham shared. “Someone else had a goal of leading a 5.10 and ended up leading (and sending) and least two of them. It was honestly just a great day to get people from stores and the office out together with a common interest.”

“Folks from the Vancouver MEC store were so happy to be there, and really sent the psyche and positivity levels through the roof.”

When it comes to sustainability, we like to think everyone wants to do their part. So we’re excited to bring you a new bag share pilot program in Vancouver and North Vancouver to help reduce waste.

In 2008, MEC eliminated single-use shopping bags from our stores, which keeps a massive **3.4 million single-use bags out of the landfill each year**. In all our stores, we offer reusable bags for purchase in case you have an armful of outdoor gear to wrangle. But the reality is, some of us don’t need another reusable bag (a lot of the time they end up being stuffed in a drawer or under the sink).

This is where our new bag-share program comes in.

We’re all human – sometimes we forget to bring our reusable bags. MEC’s new bag share program is here for those moments. Our plan is to have a collection of reusable bags that have been donated by customers and staff to be reused by other community members.

## How it works
Be part of bag-share history. Bring us your extra reusable bags and we’ll put them to work:

It all starts with people dropping off bags. We’ll sort (and clean, if needed) and keep these bags near the checkout desk for anyone to use if they’ve forgotten their own bag and don’t need to purchase another reusable one. If you take a bag from the bag share, bring one back to MEC next time you’re in to help someone else out and to keep the bag share cycle going.

## Think this is a cool idea? Here's how to help
**Bring us your bags**: If you have a closet brimming with excess reusable bags, we want them! Drop off your extra reusable bags to the MEC Vancouver or MEC North Vancouver stores. (We’d love it if the bags are clean before you drop them off.) Look for the reusable bag drop off bin or ask a staffer if you can’t find it.

**Keep the bag share going**: If you borrow a bag when you shop at MEC, please bring one back to the store next time for you or someone else to use.

**Spread the word**: Tell your family and friends about this new program to get the bag share off to a great start.

To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, we’re highlighting three women who inspire us all year long. Meet Kieren Britton, Emma Contaoe and Anita Naidu – outdoor leaders who coach, educate and help create opportunities for adventure. 

We’re honoured to have Kieren and Emma join us as speakers at [The Empowerment Festival](/en/explore/the-empowerment-festival) coming to MEC stores between March 8–18 to celebrate International Women’s Day and diversity outdoors. Everyone is welcome – we hope to see you there!

#### The Empowerment Festival supports The Lady Alliance scholarship program – what’s this program about? 
[The Lady Alliance scholarship program](https://theladyalliance.com/empowerment/) is entering our first full year of delivery, and we are beyond excited. Through this program, our hope is to start breaking down barriers to help change the face of leadership in the outdoors. 

The program features entry-level courses, including avalanche safety training, wilderness first aid and more. We want to grow to provide full-time career opportunities for those impacted by misogyny in the outdoor industry, and help showcase more diversity in leadership roles in the outdoors. To do so, we want to start eliminating some of the barriers to entry. Education in the outdoor industry is expensive, from the cost of the courses to the gear you need. Anyone – regardless of gender – is welcome to apply.

> My outdoors motto: “low expectations, high excitement.” Low expectations mean disappointments are rare and if conditions aren’t right, it’s easier to make safe decisions. But excitement for adventure should always be high!

#### The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. What’s your advice for allies to help #BreakTheBias outdoors? 
After hosting and interacting with over 2,000 women+ in all walks of life through five years of our events, retreats, courses and adventures, I’ve consistently been reminded of one thing: Everyone is unique. And each approach to outdoor adventure is a unique journey. 

Yes, anyone can step outside their home or apartment and be “outside.” But if you: 

- are able to purchase, rent or find secondhand gear
- have the financial means to seek education, time-tested exposure or a guide
- have the means to travel outside your city to a trailhead or resort
- have the body capabilities to get active outdoors and chase adventure 
- can find gear that fits your body and can provide you with appropriate safety outdoors
- are able to take time off work, or find care for a child or a dependent
- live in a location where natural spaces are easily accessible

… then you are immensely blessed and lucky!

Not everyone has these. Background, culture, time, experience, finances, access, ability, education, mental state, support, home life – all of these elements (and more) play a massive role in someone's experience outdoors. 

So my advice: Avoid assumptions and grouping statements. Some of us have these privileges listed above, and some people do not. Outdoor adventure is not an equalizer, and access to the outdoors creates polarity. The moment we start to group everyone together and assume their journey was like our own is the moment our ego exceeds our ability to listen, learn and create an inclusive adventure community.

#### What does #BreakTheBias mean to you in the outdoors?
For me, breaking the bias means experiencing the outdoors in your own way, whether it be going on your first hike or pursuing your biggest dream of climbing a mountain. Breaking the bias means honouring each person’s journey in the outdoors no matter their background, their experience, or their goals. The outdoors is for everyone and every body, and we all deserve to experience it in our own way.
 
Breaking the bias to me means putting aside our “standards” or expectations in that pursuit. To normalize being a beginner at something, and to not put an importance on what an “outdoorsy person” should look like. By putting our judgements aside, being open to sharing our knowledge and journey (whether big or small), and celebrating others’ journeys (whether big or small), we can reduce the barriers to entry to the outdoors and allow outdoor enthusiasts to feel welcome in this space.

#### What’s a common theme you see from participants at your Climbing Escapes retreats? 
The fact that many of us want to feel like we belong somewhere, to a community of people who see us, understand us. The fact of being present for the other, listening to their story and realizing that we can all learn something from someone else’s journey empowers us all to share our story and realize that what we have in common is that we are navigating a human experience.

> If something sparks your curiosity, just go for it. Reach out to people who are already doing it and ask questions. I’ve met some incredible people by using social media as a tool to grow my community.

#### What’s an inspiring outdoor group you think is doing great work? 
I recently discovered Hike MTL, a group that organizes outdoor events for BIPOC communities. I also appreciate Les Chèvres de Montagne, a female-led group that encourages girls to try different outdoor sports. As well, B.I.G. Initiative is a female-led organization that highlights stories of incredible humans in their communities through their films. They also run route-setting workshops for women.

#### What are you most excited about for with your 2022 mountain bike clinics?
Their reach. The popularity of the clinics has just soared, with requests coming in from all over North Amercia, Europe, Africa, Asia and people willing to travel from far away to attend. I’m so excited to condense complex issues into offering a meaningful biking and learning experience combined for so many people. It’s going to be another richly rewarding summer of people reaching closer to their full potential as riders, activists and humans. 

#### What’s a common theme in your mountain bike clinics that you think is useful for others to know? 
The participants think they have to be better than they are just to start. I get so many nervous emails from people saying they have never jumped before, or they haven’t ridden a bike in years, or they’re wondering if they’re too slow for the clinic. Your starting point doesn’t matter – never apologize for being slow or for being a beginner. You are always faster than someone and slower than someone else, and every single person – from first-timers to world cup winners – is working on some aspect of their riding. Comparing just robs all the joy out of a great sport, so remember to just ride your own ride.

> Just getting started in a new sport? Demo and rent or borrow gear before buying. Try out different fits and products before investing so you can figure out your preferences because gear is so personal.

#### What does #BreakTheBias mean to you in the outdoors?
Breaking the bias in the outdoors means interrupting injustice without mirroring it. It means cultivating a tremendous amount of curiosity and patience, while questioning our own assumptions all the time and working towards progressive wins.

#### What are some ways outdoor communities can become more inclusive?  
Take anti-racism and decolonization training! It’s a mistake to think equity follows naturally from diversity. Every time I do anti-racism training sessions with people, they finally come to understand that just “getting black and brown people into the outdoors” or including them in photoshoots or ads is not the solution. Anti-racism training teaches you that it’s about reallocating power and how to reallocate such power.

Women who inspire us all year long

Happy birthday, fleece! That’s right, technical fleece is celebrating a milestone birthday this year.

Forty years ago, fleece first hit the outdoor scene; it was developed by a textile company in Massachusetts called Malden Mills, now known as Polartec. Today, it’s hard to imagine a camping weekend or ski trip without fleece along for the journey.

To celebrate the big fuzzy 4-0, MEC and Polartec teamed up to create the special edition ’82 Polar Fleece Pullover. Inspired from an original design in the 1982 MEC catalogue, this updated version has the same great features but more efficient Polartec fleece.

And because we like to think big when it comes to milestones, we’re combining two of our favourite things into one celebration: fleece and mountains.

### This fleece gives back for International Mountain Day

[International Mountain Day](https://www.un.org/en/observances/mountain-day) is a United Nations initiative to highlight the importance of mountains as biodiversity hotspots, freshwater sources and natural treasures. To help look after the mountains we love, MEC will donate **$10 to** [**Leave No Trace Canada**](https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/leave-no-trace-canada) from every ’82 Polar Fleece Pullover purchase (until December 13).



## Why we love this fleece

## Why we love Leave No Trace Canada
This year’s International Mountain Day on December 11 is all about sustainable mountain tourism, so Leave No Trace Canada seemed like the perfect match for this initiative. Leave No Trace Canada educates and promotes ways to enjoy the outdoor responsibly, which is especially important these days as more people discover the power of nature, mountains and wild spaces.

Need a refresher on the 7 principles of Leave No Trace? Here are the basics:

### 1. Plan ahead and prepare

Research before you hit the trail. Check the weather, conditions and regulations and bring the essentials. Poor planning can mean putting yourself at risk or damaging nature through things like poor campsite selection or not knowing a fire ban is on.



### 2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces

Fragile ecosystems can take years to recover, especially in places like alpine meadows. Stick to the trail when you’re hiking (no cutting switchbacks) and when you pitch your tent, look for gravel, dry grass, snow or bare dirt.



### 3. Dispose of waste properly

Always pack out what you pack in, even for biodegradable stuff like apple cores. When nature calls, get at least 70 paces away from trails, campsites and water sources. Dig a small hole about 15cm (6in.) to do your business, and bury your toilet paper if you can’t pack it out.



### 4. Leave what you find

Take photos as your way to remember time on the trail. Leave neat rocks and wildflowers in nature so other hikers and campers can discover them too.



### 5. Minimize campfire impacts

Stoves can be an excellent fire alternative to traditional campfires, especially in fragile environments (and always check fire ban rules). Since fire bans are becoming more common, make sure to have a campfire-free back up plan.



### 6. Respect wildlife

Give wildlife lots of space; watch them through binoculars instead of moving closer. It may be tempting to feed cute chipmunks or whiskeyjacks, but resist the temptation so they don’t become dependent on human junk food.



### 7. Be considerate of other visitors

Have fun and help others have fun in nature too. Keep the noise down, wear headphones and respect the guidelines around pets for where you’re visiting.
