Outdoor Tips, Tricks, Inspiration and Activities | MEC Blog

We were pretty dang excited to welcome Tommy Caldwell and the [Edelrid](/en/products/c/300/brands/edelrid) crew to BC for a jam-packed few days of activities. Judging by the massive line-up outside our Vancouver store, the MEC community was pumped too.

So what do you get up to when a climbing legend comes to town? You *CUDDLE*, talk climbing gear and hit Electric Avenue. A massive thank you to Tommy and Edelrid for a fun time with MEC members and staffers – check out the highlights below.

## Day 1: sold-out event
A full house! The evening talk with Tommy sold out in a record-breaking 16 hours. It was great to welcome the climbing community to our store, and all event proceeds went to the [Climbers’ Access Society of British Columbia](https://www.access-society.ca/) – **$4,136 in total**. 


## *CUDDLE* film screening
Attendees got to see Tommy Caldwell’s latest film *CUDDLE*, which covered his latest adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park with Alex Honnold and Adam Stack. 

Tommy told us that it was the first time on film that he’s “truly getting his ass kicked”. Somehow, they managed laughs between a missed resupply, a serious lack of pants, climbing exposed terrain by phone flashlight overnight, and plenty of gut-wrenching hours.

During the Q&A session, Tommy weighed in all kinds of topics: weather in the Rockies, environmental advocacy, testing the heck out of products, a 6mm simul-climbing system (for the record, not tested, not approved, not recommended), bringing kids on adventures, risk assessment, and most importantly, the snacks Adam Stack rescued them with during the CDUL (answer: enormous burritos).

Huge thanks to local groups that joined us: [Vancouver Climbers Association](https://www.vanclimbers.com/), [BelayAll](https://www.belayall.com/), [Protect Our Winters Canada](/en/explore/protect-our-winters-canada) (POW Canada) and the [Climbers’ Access Society of BC](https://www.access-society.ca/). 

Tommy shared how he likes to support at least three non-profits at a time, including the POW Climb athlete alliance. “They’re doing great work on policy to make a real difference for climate change.” We highly recommend checking out POW Canada or your local climbing group – protecting access and the environment keeps crags, cliffs and climbing areas going.


There was plenty of time to say hi, snap a pic, and get gear or books signed. An enormous stack of raffle prizes from Edelrid’s Climb Green collection rounded out the night, and the grand prize was a morning climbing session with Tommy the next day. Nice!

## Day 2: rise and climb
Bright and early the next day, raffle winners joined Tommy and folks from Edelrid, MEC Label, The Hive, POW Canada and the Vancouver Climbers’ Association at the store.

Edelrid and their team from Germany chatted about developing their Climb Green collection and the future of more sustainable climbing gear. They’re a leader in this space and are proof that sustainability doesn’t mean compromising safety or performance. Recycled rope, PFC-free dry-treated ropes, and bluesign®-approved harnesses are just a few of the wins. Plus, they hinted at a major announcement for 2023.

Coffee, carbs and crushing to start the day. Yep, MEC Vancouver has a bouldering wall – stay tuned for future invites to join us.

## Day 3: Squamish climb session
To round out the visit, Edelrid, Tommy and MEC staffers went to Squamish for an experiential product knowledge session. We were lucky to have three people from Edelrid Germany – the CEO and owner, head of product, and global sales manager.


Product knowledge sessions (a.k.a. PKs) are one of the ways staffers get experience with gear. “Everyone was very excited to get an informal PK where you get to try and use the products in the field, and learn directly from the Edelrid team,” said Graham, MEC staffer and climbing product expert. 

“One of the things that Edelrid developer spoke about is how they focus on the 3 Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) when creating products,” Graham shared. “He emphasized how important reduce and reuse are, and that recycle is a last resort because the product is already made and therefore energy intensive.”

“We spent the whole day at the Electric Avenue crag, and safety was a top priority with a hired guide and the experienced Edelrid crew giving everyone the attention and support they needed,” said Graham. 

“There was a wide range of climbers and some big moments – we even had a staffer climb their first route ever (ever ever) belayed by Tommy Caldwell… not many people can say that.”

“Another staffer was coming back to climbing after a two-year hiatus, and found confidence and support from everyone,” Graham shared. “Someone else had a goal of leading a 5.10 and ended up leading (and sending) and least two of them. It was honestly just a great day to get people from stores and the office out together with a common interest.”

“Folks from the Vancouver MEC store were so happy to be there, and really sent the psyche and positivity levels through the roof.”

When it comes to sustainability, we like to think everyone wants to do their part. So we’re excited to bring you a new bag share pilot program in Vancouver and North Vancouver to help reduce waste.

In 2008, MEC eliminated single-use shopping bags from our stores, which keeps a massive **3.4 million single-use bags out of the landfill each year**. In all our stores, we offer reusable bags for purchase in case you have an armful of outdoor gear to wrangle. But the reality is, some of us don’t need another reusable bag (a lot of the time they end up being stuffed in a drawer or under the sink).

This is where our new bag-share program comes in.

We’re all human – sometimes we forget to bring our reusable bags. MEC’s new bag share program is here for those moments. Our plan is to have a collection of reusable bags that have been donated by customers and staff to be reused by other community members.

## How it works
Be part of bag-share history. Bring us your extra reusable bags and we’ll put them to work:

It all starts with people dropping off bags. We’ll sort (and clean, if needed) and keep these bags near the checkout desk for anyone to use if they’ve forgotten their own bag and don’t need to purchase another reusable one. If you take a bag from the bag share, bring one back to MEC next time you’re in to help someone else out and to keep the bag share cycle going.

## Think this is a cool idea? Here's how to help
**Bring us your bags**: If you have a closet brimming with excess reusable bags, we want them! Drop off your extra reusable bags to the MEC Vancouver or MEC North Vancouver stores. (We’d love it if the bags are clean before you drop them off.) Look for the reusable bag drop off bin or ask a staffer if you can’t find it.

**Keep the bag share going**: If you borrow a bag when you shop at MEC, please bring one back to the store next time for you or someone else to use.

**Spread the word**: Tell your family and friends about this new program to get the bag share off to a great start.

To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, we’re highlighting three women who inspire us all year long. Meet Kieren Britton, Emma Contaoe and Anita Naidu – outdoor leaders who coach, educate and help create opportunities for adventure. 

We’re honoured to have Kieren and Emma join us as speakers at [The Empowerment Festival](/en/explore/the-empowerment-festival) coming to MEC stores between March 8–18 to celebrate International Women’s Day and diversity outdoors. Everyone is welcome – we hope to see you there!

#### The Empowerment Festival supports The Lady Alliance scholarship program – what’s this program about? 
[The Lady Alliance scholarship program](https://theladyalliance.com/empowerment/) is entering our first full year of delivery, and we are beyond excited. Through this program, our hope is to start breaking down barriers to help change the face of leadership in the outdoors. 

The program features entry-level courses, including avalanche safety training, wilderness first aid and more. We want to grow to provide full-time career opportunities for those impacted by misogyny in the outdoor industry, and help showcase more diversity in leadership roles in the outdoors. To do so, we want to start eliminating some of the barriers to entry. Education in the outdoor industry is expensive, from the cost of the courses to the gear you need. Anyone – regardless of gender – is welcome to apply.

> My outdoors motto: “low expectations, high excitement.” Low expectations mean disappointments are rare and if conditions aren’t right, it’s easier to make safe decisions. But excitement for adventure should always be high!

#### The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. What’s your advice for allies to help #BreakTheBias outdoors? 
After hosting and interacting with over 2,000 women+ in all walks of life through five years of our events, retreats, courses and adventures, I’ve consistently been reminded of one thing: Everyone is unique. And each approach to outdoor adventure is a unique journey. 

Yes, anyone can step outside their home or apartment and be “outside.” But if you: 

- are able to purchase, rent or find secondhand gear
- have the financial means to seek education, time-tested exposure or a guide
- have the means to travel outside your city to a trailhead or resort
- have the body capabilities to get active outdoors and chase adventure 
- can find gear that fits your body and can provide you with appropriate safety outdoors
- are able to take time off work, or find care for a child or a dependent
- live in a location where natural spaces are easily accessible

… then you are immensely blessed and lucky!

Not everyone has these. Background, culture, time, experience, finances, access, ability, education, mental state, support, home life – all of these elements (and more) play a massive role in someone's experience outdoors. 

So my advice: Avoid assumptions and grouping statements. Some of us have these privileges listed above, and some people do not. Outdoor adventure is not an equalizer, and access to the outdoors creates polarity. The moment we start to group everyone together and assume their journey was like our own is the moment our ego exceeds our ability to listen, learn and create an inclusive adventure community.

#### What does #BreakTheBias mean to you in the outdoors?
For me, breaking the bias means experiencing the outdoors in your own way, whether it be going on your first hike or pursuing your biggest dream of climbing a mountain. Breaking the bias means honouring each person’s journey in the outdoors no matter their background, their experience, or their goals. The outdoors is for everyone and every body, and we all deserve to experience it in our own way.
 
Breaking the bias to me means putting aside our “standards” or expectations in that pursuit. To normalize being a beginner at something, and to not put an importance on what an “outdoorsy person” should look like. By putting our judgements aside, being open to sharing our knowledge and journey (whether big or small), and celebrating others’ journeys (whether big or small), we can reduce the barriers to entry to the outdoors and allow outdoor enthusiasts to feel welcome in this space.

#### What’s a common theme you see from participants at your Climbing Escapes retreats? 
The fact that many of us want to feel like we belong somewhere, to a community of people who see us, understand us. The fact of being present for the other, listening to their story and realizing that we can all learn something from someone else’s journey empowers us all to share our story and realize that what we have in common is that we are navigating a human experience.

> If something sparks your curiosity, just go for it. Reach out to people who are already doing it and ask questions. I’ve met some incredible people by using social media as a tool to grow my community.

#### What’s an inspiring outdoor group you think is doing great work? 
I recently discovered Hike MTL, a group that organizes outdoor events for BIPOC communities. I also appreciate Les Chèvres de Montagne, a female-led group that encourages girls to try different outdoor sports. As well, B.I.G. Initiative is a female-led organization that highlights stories of incredible humans in their communities through their films. They also run route-setting workshops for women.

#### What are you most excited about for with your 2022 mountain bike clinics?
Their reach. The popularity of the clinics has just soared, with requests coming in from all over North Amercia, Europe, Africa, Asia and people willing to travel from far away to attend. I’m so excited to condense complex issues into offering a meaningful biking and learning experience combined for so many people. It’s going to be another richly rewarding summer of people reaching closer to their full potential as riders, activists and humans. 

#### What’s a common theme in your mountain bike clinics that you think is useful for others to know? 
The participants think they have to be better than they are just to start. I get so many nervous emails from people saying they have never jumped before, or they haven’t ridden a bike in years, or they’re wondering if they’re too slow for the clinic. Your starting point doesn’t matter – never apologize for being slow or for being a beginner. You are always faster than someone and slower than someone else, and every single person – from first-timers to world cup winners – is working on some aspect of their riding. Comparing just robs all the joy out of a great sport, so remember to just ride your own ride.

> Just getting started in a new sport? Demo and rent or borrow gear before buying. Try out different fits and products before investing so you can figure out your preferences because gear is so personal.

#### What does #BreakTheBias mean to you in the outdoors?
Breaking the bias in the outdoors means interrupting injustice without mirroring it. It means cultivating a tremendous amount of curiosity and patience, while questioning our own assumptions all the time and working towards progressive wins.

#### What are some ways outdoor communities can become more inclusive?  
Take anti-racism and decolonization training! It’s a mistake to think equity follows naturally from diversity. Every time I do anti-racism training sessions with people, they finally come to understand that just “getting black and brown people into the outdoors” or including them in photoshoots or ads is not the solution. Anti-racism training teaches you that it’s about reallocating power and how to reallocate such power.

Women who inspire us all year long

Happy birthday, fleece! That’s right, technical fleece is celebrating a milestone birthday this year.

Forty years ago, fleece first hit the outdoor scene; it was developed by a textile company in Massachusetts called Malden Mills, now known as Polartec. Today, it’s hard to imagine a camping weekend or ski trip without fleece along for the journey.

To celebrate the big fuzzy 4-0, MEC and Polartec teamed up to create the special edition ’82 Polar Fleece Pullover. Inspired from an original design in the 1982 MEC catalogue, this updated version has the same great features but more efficient Polartec fleece.

And because we like to think big when it comes to milestones, we’re combining two of our favourite things into one celebration: fleece and mountains.

### This fleece gives back for International Mountain Day

[International Mountain Day](https://www.un.org/en/observances/mountain-day) is a United Nations initiative to highlight the importance of mountains as biodiversity hotspots, freshwater sources and natural treasures. To help look after the mountains we love, MEC will donate **$10 to** [**Leave No Trace Canada**](https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/leave-no-trace-canada) from every ’82 Polar Fleece Pullover purchase (until December 13).



## Why we love this fleece
The ’82 Pullover is made with plush Polartec® Thermal Pro fleece, which is warm yet lightweight with a classic wool shearling look. For a nod to fleece history, we’ve added a retro Polartec flag label next to the new MEC mountain patch. We love the relaxed fit for layering, the high collar to keep out drafts, and the bluesign-approved fabric for reduced environmental impact.

## Why we love Leave No Trace Canada
This year’s International Mountain Day on December 11 is all about sustainable mountain tourism, so Leave No Trace Canada seemed like the perfect match for this initiative. Leave No Trace Canada educates and promotes ways to enjoy the outdoor responsibly, which is especially important these days as more people discover the power of nature, mountains and wild spaces.

Need a refresher on the 7 principles of Leave No Trace? Here are the basics:

### 1. Plan ahead and prepare

Research before you hit the trail. Check the weather, conditions and regulations and bring the essentials. Poor planning can mean putting yourself at risk or damaging nature through things like poor campsite selection or not knowing a fire ban is on.



### 2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces

Fragile ecosystems can take years to recover, especially in places like alpine meadows. Stick to the trail when you’re hiking (no cutting switchbacks) and when you pitch your tent, look for gravel, dry grass, snow or bare dirt.



### 3. Dispose of waste properly

Always pack out what you pack in, even for biodegradable stuff like apple cores. When nature calls, get at least 70 paces away from trails, campsites and water sources. Dig a small hole about 15cm (6in.) to do your business, and bury your toilet paper if you can’t pack it out.



### 4. Leave what you find

Take photos as your way to remember time on the trail. Leave neat rocks and wildflowers in nature so other hikers and campers can discover them too.



### 5. Minimize campfire impacts

Stoves can be an excellent fire alternative to traditional campfires, especially in fragile environments (and always check fire ban rules). Since fire bans are becoming more common, make sure to have a campfire-free back up plan.



### 6. Respect wildlife

Give wildlife lots of space; watch them through binoculars instead of moving closer. It may be tempting to feed cute chipmunks or whiskeyjacks, but resist the temptation so they don’t become dependent on human junk food.



### 7. Be considerate of other visitors

Have fun and help others have fun in nature too. Keep the noise down, wear headphones and respect the guidelines around pets for where you’re visiting.

[CPAWS](/en/explore/canadian-parks-and-wilderness-society) is dedicated to the protection of Canada’s public land, ocean, and freshwater. With MEC’s support, they’re holding the federal government accountable for its commitments to protect 25% of Canada’s land and ocean by 2025 and 30% by 2030.

- **First [CPAWS Report Card for Canada](https://cpaws.org/our-work/reportcard/)**: tracks and assessed how Canada did against its targets or protecting land and ocean.

- **Release of the [MPA Monitor](https://cpaws.org/our-work/ocean/oceanreport/)**: investigates how well-protected and well-managed Canada’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) really are.

## The gift of empowering youth outdoors
[Spirit North](/en/explore/spirit-north) empowers Indigenous youth to be unstoppable in sport, school and life. Through the transformative power of sport and play, Spirit North helps youth find the courage to take on any challenge, develop leadership skills, improve health and wellness, discover new talents and unlock limitless potential. ## Highlights from 2020–21:

- **Programming with impact**: delivered programs to over 2,700 Indigenous youth across 40 communities, including in-school and after-school sessions, knowledge and skill building events.

- **Trail building**: worked with 10 communities to develop trail networks to create a legacy that supports and inspires community recreation for generations to come.

- **New regional programs**: in Terrace, Kitsumkalum and the Nass Valley that provided mountain bike skills to youth aged 7–14.

## The gift of real change
The mission of [Protect Our Winters (POW) Canada](/en/explore/protect-our-winters-canada) is to turn outdoor enthusiasts into climate advocates. MEC’s support has allowed POW to dig deep on policy advocacy, diversity, equity and inclusion, and community building.

Highlights from 2020–21:

- **More educational programming and training**: to grow POW membership to 22,736 climate action advocates.

- **POW Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Action Plan**: diversity and equity in the outdoors is integral to solving climate change; this plan includes DEI training for POW staff, board and ambassadors.

- **Support of advocacy work**: on Bill C-12 and the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, likely the single most important piece of climate policy ever passed.

## The gift of winter safety
Avalanche safety training is so important for winter backcountry trips, and MEC has supported [Avalanche Canada](/en/explore/avalanche-canada) since 2001. They offer mountain weather forecasts, a free avalanche forecast app, and [Avy Savvy](https://avysavvy.avalanche.ca/en-ca) – a free online avalanche tutorial to take before a training program.

Highlights from 2020–21:

- **New MEC Avalanche Safety Grant**: aimed at non-profit organizations that serve racialized communities. It was awarded to four incredible organizations: [Indigenous Women Outdoors](https://www.indigenouswomenoutdoors.ca/), [Rocky Mountain Metis Association](https://www.cranbrookmetis.com/), [K8 Mountaineering Club of AB](https://www.facebook.com/k8mountaineeringclubofalberta/), and [Colour the Trails](https://colourthetrails.com/).
- **MEC x Avalanche Canada webinar series**: [free webinar series](https://www.avalanche.ca/events/avalanche-canada-bi-weekly-webinar-series-2021-22), including recognizing avalanche terrain, getting the most out of the Mountain Weather Forecast, leveraging social media for a safer winter, and more.

## The gift of more time outside
[Take Me Outside](/en/explore/take-me-outside) believes in a future where spending time outside learning, playing and exploring is a regular and significant part of every student’s day. They work with organizations, schools and individuals to encourage kids to spend more time outside.

Highlights from 2021:

- **More programming for [Take Me Outside Day](https://takemeoutside.ca/2021-summary-report/)**: 9,000 teachers and 400,000 students participated, and it included presentations with Indigenous storytellers, Olympic athletes and Dr. Jane Goodall.
- **[Take Me Outside for Learning Challenge](https://takemeoutside.ca/take-me-outside-for-learning-challenge-2021/)**: doubled in growth from 2020 – 6,700 teachers signed on! It’s a commitment to outdoor learning and taking your class outside once a week.

## The gift of camping for the first time
For a decade, MEC and [Parks Canada](/en/explore/parks-canada) have worked together to provide Learn-to Camp. It aims to instill confidence and outdoor skills so new campers can discover the joy of tents and s’mores. Although 2021 looked a little different, Parks Canada has still hosted 844 Learn-to Camp events (virtual and in-person) so far to help folks get outdoors responsibly, along with at-home activities on the Parks Canada website.

Highlights from 2021:

- **Outreach booths**: free info sessions at popular trailheads to introduce people to Parks Canada, camping and outdoor safety.
- **Learn-to Camp free workshops**: virtual and in-person workshops for families and newcomer organizations to learn camping skills, safety considerations and tips about camping in national parks.
- **Regional programs**: new Learn-to Paddle activities in Montreal, and lending camping gear to interested organizations in Saskatoon and Edmonton.

## The gift of gigantic adventures
We have a rich history of partnership with the [Association of Canadian Mountain Guides](/en/explore/association-of-canadian-mountain-guides) (ACMG), which trains and certifies guides and instructors in climbing, backcountry skiing, hiking and more. MEC supports their Adventure Access program to fund schools, clubs and youth groups to hire ACMG-certified guides and instructors for outdoor adventure trips.

Highlights from 2021:

- **MEC Adventure Access Program**: for groups that represent youth, BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, adaptive and marginalized communities to access subsidies for certified guides and instructors for exciting trips. There are enough barriers to recreating outside – money shouldn’t be an added one.
- **Community scholarships**: tuition support to the next generation of ACMG guides.
- **DEI training**: for ACMG members and instructors on diversity, equity and inclusion and mental health issues to better support outdoor communities.

## The gift of caring for the wild
As a founding member of [Leave No Trace Canada](/en/explore/leave-no-trace-canada), MEC supports its mission to promote the responsible use of outdoor spaces through education, research and partnerships. Their training and programs show that even small changes in behavior can have monumental impacts on the outdoors.

- **Plans for public education**: We’re working together on videos and content to spread the word about Leave No Trace to share with the community of people exploring outside… stay tuned!

## The gift of visiting parks
[Parkbus](/en/explore/parkbus) connects city dwellers with nature through accessible transportation, and operates bus services to national and provincial parks. MEC partners with Parkbus to run two special programs focused on community building, education, inclusion and diversity: ActiveDays and NatureLink.

Highlights from 2021:

- **ActiveDays is back**: with restrictions easing, Toronto and Vancouver [ActiveDays programs](https://activedays.parkbus.ca/) returned with 1,900 participants so far!
- **More [NatureLink](https://www.parkbus.ca/naturelink) programs**: subsidized transportation to outdoor spaces, plus programs and adventures for newcomers, with 500 participants this year (and counting). Thanks to MEC’s support, Parkbus is recruiting new partners for NatureLink – if you’re a non-profit working with new Canadians and low-income individuals or families, [find out more](https://www.parkbus.ca/naturelink).

## The gift of backcountry trips
MEC’s annual funding supports the operation and maintenance of the [Alpine Club of Canada](/en/explore/alpine-club-of-canada)’s hut network, along with initiatives such as Girls on Ice and women’s only climbing camps to help more folks access the backcountry.

Highlights from 2021:

- **Women’s climbing camps**: the ACC’s Women’s Program expanded to team up with [Darken the Mountains](https://www.darkenthemountains.com/) and [Colour The Trails](https://colourthetrails.com/), bringing inclusivity to outdoor spaces through subsidized mountaineering trips that build upon mountaineering skills for communities of BIPOC women.

- **Girls on Ice Canada**: a unique, tuition-free wilderness science expedition. This year, accompanied by certified mountain guides, scientists and artists, a team of young women spent 12 days exploring and studying ecosystems in Glacier National Park. MEC supports Girls on Ice Canada through diversity, equity and inclusivity funding.

- **Philippe Delesalle Memorial Grant**: given annually to underprivileged youth, this grant aims to expand access to alpine experiences, knowledge and culture to more Canadians. The [next deadline to apply](https://www.alpineclubofcanada.ca/web/ACCMember/Community/Financial_Grants.aspx) is January 31, 2022.

## The gift of inspiring expeditions
Best known for its *Canadian Geographic* magazine, [The Royal Canadian Geographical Society](/en/explore/royal-canadian-geographical-society) also supports the outdoor community with expedition grants and scholarships for cutting-edge geographical research. MEC is proud to support these expedition programs.

Highlights from 2021:

- **Expedition grant program**: expeditions are currently underway! This year, MEC funding supported all the Society’s expedition grants, including the Women’s Expedition and the Indigenous Expedition grants, as well as the Expedition of the Year. - **Outfitting for expedition teams**: when you’re exploring in extreme conditions, you need gear that can withstand harsh conditions. Expedition teams are outfitted with MEC gear to support their adventures.

Giving Tuesday and giving back to the outdoors

Back in 2013, MEC shifted our logo from a mountain icon to a simple green square. The response was, well, mixed. Actually – mixed might be an understatement. The response was that people really loved the mountain. A lot. It still came up in conversations eight years later.

Turns out, we missed the mountain too.

So we’re stoked to announce that the mountain is back – for good. The return to the mountain is about connecting our past with our future and reminding us about what matters most: good gear, good advice, and building communities of people who like to get outside.

## The design details

Like any major expedition, this project was a team effort. We worked closely with the crew at Vancouver-based at Hulse & Durrell, who understand the value of iconic Canadian logos through their work with the Canadian Olympic Committee, Design Canada and more.

Along with the return of the peaks, the colour was also adjusted. The deep forest green is a nod to the classic hue of MEC backpacks and fleece jackets. The type alignment was fine-tuned to work with the new look, and the font itself was made in Canada. Mountain Sans was designed by Julien Hébert in Montreal.

## The mountain means great gear
Awesome outdoor gear is at the heart of what we do. For this fall and winter, we’re going deep with gear for experienced users, such as the largest assortment of backcountry touring and technical ice climbing gear. We’re also carrying products for beginners and families who are just starting out with activities like Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and winter camping.

We’ve also looked at [MEC Label](/en/products/c/300/brands/mec), the products we design ourselves. Keep an eye out for more technical lines and MEC classics coming back for another run. Our 50th anniversary collection was a hit, and it speaks to all we stand for moving forward: an incredible attention to detail, more sustainable fabrics ([bluesign®-approved](/en/article/what-the-heck-is-bluesign), [recycled fleece](/en/explore/recycled-fibres), [organic cotton](/en/explore/natural-and-organic-fibres)) and [Fair Trade certification](/en/explore/fair-trade).

## The mountain means sustainable action
Over the last year, we kept pushing to reduce our environmental footprint. MEC has had decades of success making significant changes, and we’re not done yet. What we’re working on now:

Building a climate action plan: We’re collaborating with the Outdoor Industry Association’s Climate Action Corps to address climate change. Our action plan will align with the International Panel on Climate Change and science-based targets (warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius).

- **Sustainable material targets**: We announced our [MEC Label targets](/en/article/our-sustainability-goals-for-mec-label-products) earlier this year. Our progress so far is that 25% of apparel is Fair Trade, 30% of apparel is recycled polyester, 91% of apparel is bluesign®-approved materials, and natural fibres are 100% organically grown or Tencel.

- **More Fair Trade**: We’re increasing our commitment to Fair Trade. By 2025, our goal is to have 50% of MEC Label clothing made in a Fair Trade Certified factory. Our total contribution through Fair Trade premiums is $300,000, which goes directly to factory workers.

- **Textile recycling pilot**: We joined a program with Fashion Takes Action (supported by Environment & Climate Change Canada) to better understand the barriers currently to a closed loop textile recycling system in Canada.

## The mountain means outdoor community
This year, MEC donated $1 million to Canadian outdoor organizations as part of our [Outdoor Impact](/en/explore/outdoor-impact) program. Our partners have been using these funds to do incredible stuff. 

A few highlights:

- **A new MEC Avalanche Safety Grant** through [Avalanche Canada](/en/explore/avalanche-canada). This grant is aimed at non-profit organizations that serve racialized communities and will allow more people to access the winter backcountry safely.

- **Helping [Spirit North](/en/explore/spirit-north)** reach 2,700 Indigenous youth across 40 communities, including 953 in-school and 336 after-school sessions, knowledge and skill building events with students, parents, educators and community.

- **Helping [Protect Our Winters (POW) Canada](/en/explore/protect-our-winters-canada)** expand its educational programming and training, and grow its membership to 21,797 climate action advocates. MEC funding also supported the execution of the POW Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Action Plan, recognizing that diversity and equity in the outdoor space are integral to solving climate change. This includes advocacy work on Bill C-12 and the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, likely the single most important piece of climate policy ever passed.

- **Release of the first CPAWS Report Card for Canada**. The report card tracks and assesses how Canada did against its target of protecting 17% of land and 10% of the ocean in Canada, by the end of 2020, on the way to protecting 30% by 2030. [CPAWS](/en/explore/canadian-parks-and-wilderness-society) is committed to helping Canada meet its targets.

We’re working to reintroduce workshops and events at our stores. They’ve been a popular way for people to connect with outdoor communities and learn new skills. For our staffers, we’ve kicked off MEC Adventures to help them turn “maybe one day” outdoor dreams into realities through extended leave, extra funds or gear, and benefit adjustments that support time away.

## Looking to what’s next
It’s been milestone year and a year of wild storms. MEC emerged from real business challenges with a new structure and new owners. We know some things have changed, but we’re still an outdoor retailer focused on expert advice and quality gear made with the earth in mind.

Thank you for riding out it out with us – it’s been a time of hard work and mountains of change. We’re looking forward to what’s next.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a deeply important day to recognize and commemorate the legacy of Residential Schools in Canada.

The significance of the date, September 30, stems from [Orange Shirt Day](https://www.orangeshirtday.org/about-us.html).

“Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School (1891–1981) Commemoration Project and Reunion events that took place in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in May 2013. This project was the vision of Esketemc (Alkali Lake) Chief Fred Robbins, who is a former student himself.”

“The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30 opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. We encourage you to learn more about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada calls to action, including an organization’s responsibility to provide educational opportunities for management and staff on the history of Indigenous peoples, including the history and legacy of Residential Schools. While not legislated to provide September 30 as a statutory holiday, MEC has made the decision as a provincially regulated employer to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a paid day of reflection and action, or a day of work compensated with statutory pay.

After consultation with partners and connecting with MEC’s internal staff teams, we understood that education, awareness and financial investment continue to be important to us as an organization. Therefore, we will be working alongside Indigenous leaders to expand our internal education; increasing our financial commitment to longtime MEC partner Spirit North; providing a financial donation to Orange Shirt Day Society; continuing written land acknowledgement installs in all MEC stores; distributing orange ribbons for staff uniforms to increase awareness; and creating an evolving educational hub to connect staff with relevant events and learning opportunities.
